how do you know when you should replace your rear cassette? just my gears keep slipping and i'm unsure whether it may be the rear cassette or maybe the chain? what are the possibilities? thanks

read the info on Parktools and Sheldons pages.

measure the chain for wear. and look at the teeth on the cogs.

I replaced the chain on my road bike when it was just about worn as indicated by a chain wear tool but still had to replace my cassette as the gear I obviously used the most was worn and the chain skipped on that gear. In hindsite I could have tried to replace only that ring of the cassette. If I were you a new cassette and chain will solve your probs. Get a sram chain with a powerlink as they are so easy to join and a cassette removal tool to replace the gears.

I just replaced my sram chain with a new connex chain. Both good chains imo but the connex quick links seem far easier to open than the sram power link. Oh since changing to the connex the shifting seems super smooth too.

If it's slipping then it sounds like the chain will be worn out for sure and more than likely the rear cassette too.
