Old tubes for puncture protection.

I was just wondering had anyone used an old tube as a liner in the tyre to help prevent punctures on a road bike? If so, did you find the extra weight noticeable while cycling?. Thanks.

  • It will only add another layer of rubber so any sharp objects will still get in. Try an old tubular tyre - they seem to work well.

Robert Millar used to train with a pair of winter tyres with old race tubs as inners - must've been a bu%%er to get them on and a sod if you did get a puncture!

Re the OP, there have been a number of attempts at producing 'tyre liners' e.g. Tuffy Tape the problem is that they rarely stay put inside the tyre and make handling sluggish.
