Quite rightly "Gary Glitter" is no longer given any air time on the tv.

Why is it, I was watching some TOTP2 on tv over christmas and who should appear, none other than that wide mouthed four eyed kiddie fiddling talentless w@nker Johnathan King.

How and why?

BBC can't delete all archive programmes they have as soon as someoene in it gets a criminal record.

Should 1990 World Cup footage all be deleted cos Gazza's been done for wife beating and drink driving?

    Move on.
  • So miraculacely all archive tv featuring GG has somehow managed to be erazed but that featuring JK has squeezed through the net.

As for comparing wife beating and drink driving (which I in no way condone) to peadophilia there is no comparison.

If the bloke living next door to you was a drink driver or wife beater would it have the same effect as if he was a convicted peado?

There are any number of things wrong with this post.

What are you talking about Frank?

Wasn't there more to the JK conviction? He also has quite a bit of influence in certain circles so that may help

I don't think there's anything sinister about JK appearing on TV, he did a lot and occasionally some of his stuff will probably be shown. Likewise, I'd not be surprised if GG was shown occasionally, if only by mistake.

Of course I'm not comparing wife beating and drink driving with paedophilia. The point I was making is that people that've done very bad things are on the box all the time, so getting worked up about one specific person is just rasising your blood pressure with no upside.

As for someone living next door, I don't know what you're on about - this was about TV right?

I see no problem with GG or JK being shown on TV.

The work they did on TV is unconnected with the crimes they committed. I have no problem in someone being able to earn a living.

Are you suggesting everyone with a criminal record should no longer be allowed to work?

I'm sure a few seconds of Mr King introducing some rubbish eighties act on TOTP originally recorded many years ago does not equate to him actually 'working'. Try and relax about it.

I doubt if he even knew his clip would be featured much less make any money out of it. Not that I'd be very bothered if he did.

As for your hierarchy of acceptable crimes, it's so worrying it's almost funny.

Frank, exactly how can you be sure the bloke next door (or at least living very near to you) is not a pedophile, convicted or otherwise?)

Get the torches and shovels, we've got the makings of a good lynch mob here.

Frank - I often agree with you, but I can't here. Domestic violence means that millions of people (across the world probably hundreds of millions) suffer an entire lifetime of vicious, sadistic, soul-destroying abuse and sometimes even death. I would say that it definitely can be compared to paedophila.

    +1

Views like that give a bitter irony to the thread title.
  • The only point I was really trying to make in my OP was as the thread title suggested, it appears to be a case of double standards.

I admit I got deflected onto the comparison of peadophilia and other offences which wasn't my intention. I in no way meant to play down the effects of wife beating etc. I do appreciate convicted crims often appear on tv it was just at the time it got my goat.

What about The Who? GG is no longer played on radio 2 etc, but they still play The Who, even though guitarist Pete Townshend is on the Sex Offenders register for paedophilia.

As someone who has two young daughters and had a convicted paedophile (downloading images - community service after accepting a guilty plea in return for having more serious charges dropped) living opposite me for a few years I can honestly say I would equally dislike a convicted wife beater or drink driver living next to me. They are all scum.

I don't think he was. Townshend accepted a police caution for the offence, only a court can order someone to sign the Sex Offenders Register.

Rock music is littered with people with dubious sexual pasts, Bill Wyman and Chuck Berry to name but two. As already said, their work is seperate to their private lives.

Wrong Joe, thosewho accept cautions for relevant offence DO haveto sign on the sex offenders register.

I had this when register first came in in the 1990s and just last year- both times in course of work I hasten to add

Last year I was looking at out of court disposals with the police and this was a relevant issue
