Revamping an old trek

Hi all, I have an old trek 930 singletrack (rigid), it has shimano stx gearing which runs very smooth, however I was just wondering would it be possible to transfer the majority of the bike (except forks and frame) over to a new frame, possibly an on-one scandal? I was just wondering as I was gonna stick some slicks on it and use it for some longer distance rides.

  • Your main issue will probably be that the headset, stem, seatpost and bottom bracket will need to be replaced.

I'm guessing that your old Trek has an old-style threaded headset and it's unlikely that the seatpost and bottom bracket would be of the exact same size. It's also my experience that a really old headset and BB would disintegrate on dismantling them anyway!

The rest will almost certainly transfer. A good new set of cables, grips, brake blocks and tyres would make the world of difference.

    So in summary, you'd need:

    - Aheadset (£15)
    - Ahead stem (£15)
    - Bottom bracket (£15)
    - Seatpost (£15)
    - Plus optional grips, brake blocks, cables, tyres etc (£50+)

You're probably looking at least £110 plus the new frame...
Cotic Soul - Fox 32 RLC forks, XTR go, XT stop, Hope / DT wheels, Thomson / Easton / Hope finishing

Cotic >X< - 105 and SLX go, Avid stop, XT / Mavic disc wheels and Easton finishing

Ah right, thanks very much for the reply, so all the gearing would be fine?

Yep, although you can add to that list a new front mech, I don't know the seat tube diameter of the ScandAl, but I suspect it's 31.8 or 34.9. IIRC the Treks are 28.6.

Cable pull may be different too.
  • Why not just pick up some bargains for a new drivetrain on here? Even if the parts still run efficiently would be nice having new kit on a new frame.

    Yeah thanks,
Think this will become my ongoing build for the next 6 months or so (I'm only 16).
Getting a vengeance ultimate next week and blinging it up, then might go for a scandal frame with carbon forks and trust try and make it light and quick really.
