i am in the process of buying a 2008 trek ex 7 it is in mint condition and has not been ridden much but before i hand over the cash i need to know how strong the frames really are on the 2008 range as some people have snapped the rear triangle  however trek have got the lifetime frame warranty and do replace this as it is a mechanical problem im just wondering if the lifetime warranty only applys to the first owner and if anybody out there owns a 2008 trek fuel ex be it a 7, 8 or 9 could let me know how strong the frames are
cheers :D

The strength is impossible to quantify in a meaningful way. If the seat stays haven't snapped yet they'll probably be fine. The warranty only applies to original owner, if it snapped there Trek would prob subsidise the replacement as it's a known problem.

it was the 2008 rnage where the problem was as the new abp system was fitted the welds on the bike were not strong enough after about 6months trek designed a stronger rear triangle so its just a case of whether or not it has got thstronger triangle

Put the onus on Trek. Send them an email asking if their defect is potentially life threatening.

I'm sure they would then offer you a replacement rear end.

The fact the bike is 2nd hand should be irrelevant. It's like saying a car mfr has no responsibility to design safety once a car is sold on by the original owner.
That argument wouldn't stand up in court.
    Guinness for strength

A bit excessive perhaps, I would suggest talking nicely to them would be a better way to reach an acceptable outcome than threatening to sue them!

aha ive sent a meesage to trek asking about the problem and how much a replacement rear end would cost if it does snap
ive desided to go for the bike anyway as its such a good bike for the price and touch wood everything will be fine
