I have an 8 speed road bike, I want to upgrae my crankset as the old one is won out. The only 8 speed one i can find is lowspec. Would a 9/10 speed one work?

Yes.
CRanksets are all pretty much identical, especially if they are doubles.And now you know, and knowing is half the battle
