About to give up on non ust tubeless Maxxis

For weight reasons I chose a non ust ignitor 2.1 for my rear wheel hoping the stans sealant could do the biz.

I've had the tyre on the wheel now for 6 days and not had the chance to ride yet, but it continually looses pressure from 40 - 10 psi over a day or so.

I've spent ages sloshing the sealant around and had the wheel off the bike for the last 3 days giving it the "special shake" to ensure a continual coating of the sealant, but still the slow leak.

Got a ride up Cannock lined up for Thurs and will certainly pack an inner tube.

The non UST high roller on the front seems much better at holding pressure.

Balls is all I can say. Damn tyre cost me £30 and it looks like a tube job or nothing. Balls! :x

Paying £30 for an Ignitor, ouch!

Pump it up to 60psi to make sure it's seated, then do the shakers waltz.

Sometimes a tap with a mallet around the tread helps.
Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"

New tyres that were stored folded? They could have a kink somewhere on the bead stopping them sealing properly. Stick an inner tube in and pump up and keep over night to iron out any wrinkles. Should seal better next time.

^^ This, make sure you hear that scary popping sound at least 3 or 4 times (normally at around 50 psi) as the bead seats properly into the rim
Every time I go out, I think I'm being checked out, faceless people watching on a TV screen.....
  • Alright chaps..... Did the 24 hours with a 60psi innertube in at the very start - the tyre bead is seated properly on the rim - had to use a compressor and it did clearly pop into place.

Problem is the slow leak which takes about 48 hours to get very low. Kind of like the tyre refuses to seal. Strange to me as such a slow leak I would assume could be easily taken care of with the sealant.

Got the stans stuff I've used before with no probs - about 1.5 years ago..... this is the same bottle - wouldn't have "gone off" would it? still totally liquid....
  • phil, don't panic! I've never used an ignitor but I'm sure it'll work if you're at the stage of it only leaking slowly.

You haven't ridden it yet? Then that's quite normal! It happens to me if I don't use enough soapy water, but after the first bit of riding it normally beds in no problems. I normally pump it up overly hard (60psi) and then have a bit of a ride around on it for a while and it's sorted after that. It takes a bit longer if it's really cold though.

If it doesn't seal after a couple of rides then there are a few things it could be:

Lubricant: Did you definitely really soak the rim/bead in very soapy water? You might need to do this again if you didn't.
Dirt: the tyre and the rim need to be spotless.
Sealant: Are you sure there is sealant left in there? If you think it might have all leaked out then you'll need to put more in. Removable valve core or syringe through the tyre! The stans stuff should be OK if it's still liquid. I've found it works well, although we make our own now as it's a LOT cheaper and works great, I put the recipe in my tubeless set-up tips

You've done the hard bit though, getting the initial air in there. You're on the home straight and soon will be laughing in the face of tubes (or something like that)! It's always worth having a spare tube though, I always carry one.

    .

 Does everyone do this Doug is it only us cheapskates in the warmer south of Europe ??

Our current home made version is 50/50 Latex Art glue, bought in Cultura for a few Euro a litre with Water, seems to work fine, the Bleach bit will make the Latex slightly less acid so reducing polymerisation and viscosity build up (i think)

Other thing to be sure of is that valve is not leaking, a new O ring in my Mavic valve made a big difference, oh and +1 for always carrying a spare nevertheless, even if you don't need it a friend might..

  • Ha ha PXR5, maybe it's just us 'down south'! Good explination on the bleach, we just added it because you could smell it slightly off the latex from Stans etc and found it worked well.
  • Cheers for your tips doug - I have been so busy a ride hasn't happened, but I have a goodun sorted for Thurs so I'm hoping that this will sort it once and for all.

Kinda hoping the bashing of the tyre round the trail will fix the issue. Suppose the saying make or break is appropriate here! :P

Agree with Doug. Go for a ride and should bed in fine. Im currently using standard Ignitors and they are working fine. As long as the tyres inflate and hold pressure(ish) and don't leak sealant like crazy, im happy to ride on it and they usually sort them selfs out. Or bring the wheel indoors into the warmth to get it working better.
  • Wheels have been inside for 4 days now so I can slosh the sealant around plenty. Hope the Thursday ride will fix it. Cheers
