Ultegra 6600 Shifters & Tiagra

I want to put Ultegra 6600 shifters on to my best bike which has a Tiagra groupset. The Tiagra shifters would then go on to my Winter bike (which has Sora).

I know Ultegra 6600 is 10 speed and the Tiagra is 9 but am I right in thinking, apart from having a spare click, the shifters would be fine with the Tiagra deraileurs etc...

My reason for buying the Ultegra is I have found some (new) which are cheaper than Tiagra shifters and the Ultegra would be an upgrade.

Is this a good plan? :)

NO. 9 and 10 speed shifters are not interchangeable , neither are 8 and 9 sorry

I do not think there would be a problem using the tiagra deraileur with ultegra shifter. However, if your rear cassette is a 9 speed then the indexing will probably be out. If you also changed your rear cassette to a 10sp then that setup sounds ok to me.

it still wouldnt work though. you would need a new rear deraileur as well to match.

you can mix and match shimano series, but, as far as i am aware, you have to have the same speeds (ie tiagra 9 speed would work with any other shimano series 9 speed equipment)

This post suggests there is no need to change deraulieur, after all, it just shifts the chain and the amount it shifts is determined by the cable pull. The post also has people reporting success in using 10 sp shifters with 9sp cassette.

it's just that the cable pull needs to be the same. i think the newer 5700/6700/7900 use a different one than the rest though.

so sheldon brown indicates its possible with some systems:

however, seems pretty complicated and you will need to make sure the indexing is perfect.

so i ask the question, is it worth it?

You don't need to buy a new rear deraileur when you replace the shifter. Japsy was right, the only thing you need to change at the same time is the cassette because the shifter is indexed to the number of sprockets it's designed to work with. Of course if you replace them both you may have issues with chain width and have to get a 10speed chain but it shouldn't cause any major problems

I upgraded last year from Sora to Ultegra but made sure the shifters, cassette and chain were the last thing I replaced as I was going from a 9spd triple to a 10spd double but as long as you get a matching cassette you won't have any problems

    Absolutely !

The cassette and shifters must match, the chain must be same (or 1sp narrower is OK).

The derailleurs, front & rear, are fine, they don't 'know' if they're 8/9/10sp : the shifters pull/release an amount of cable, that causes the rear mech to move sideways. The mech just moves sideways as far as the shifter tells it.
The gaps between cogs on a 10sp cassette are narrower than the gaps between 9sp, which in-turn are narrower than 8sp.
    A 10sp shifter pulls/releases a bit less cable than 9sp, which in-turn pulls/releases less than 8sp.

So you'll need a 10sp cassette and chain to go with your 10sp shifters.

Put the Tiagra shifters on your other bike and (assuming it's 8sp Sora !) also move over the cassette and chain - obviously if your Sora is 9sp, then no problem !

Front and rear mechs, chain set and brakes all stay as they are on both bikes.
