Sorry its a little late after posting already but thought I best introduce myself!

Im James, 22 from Stockport, Cheshire. Lucky to be so close to the peak district. I've only been road cycling since June 2010, initially the idea was to just commute to and from work but that idea didnt last long..

I bought a Specialized Allez, just the double version and it has served me well so far. I get out as much as I can in the evenings and at weekend although my main hobby is rock climbing! Luckily they both compliment each other.

So on behalf of me, hello everyone!

  • A static pursuit vs. a mobile pursuit. You could ride to the rock-faces.
  • Or I could ride to the rock faces! Although I would need a shoe horn to remove the bike seat from my backside after riding with my rucksack and gear on my back

Hi Jimbob, welcome, (just the double version allez), not sure if you're apologising, embarassed or what, no need to be, doubles are the way to go

  • I'm sure I'll benefit in the long run with the double but some of the hills around here are 20%+, wish I had saved a few extra pennies now!

20% should be no problem on a compact if you're 22 and light enough to haul yourself up a rockface, bear with it you'll soon benefit from the extra leg strength on the rockface what you using a 34/25?

You could always change the rear cassette to one with a bigger granny gear, maybe an 11-28. I'm guessing a new Allez would have an 11-25 or 12-26?

All a new language to me too! I think it's a 52x39 on the front and 13x26 at the back.

How much of a difference would it make to change it to a compact? Easily done?

Not sure with Shimano, whether you can switch to a compact with current front derailleur without replacing the front deraillier, any shimano users out there done that?

  • Just seen the smaller gears thread, pretty much answers my question!

    Welcome

You know there is a sport that involves both cycling and climbing, I forget the name (could be steeplechase) basically it involves plotting a route from point A to B over whatever terrain, you cycle, walk and climb when needed.

I think it was C+ that featured it a while back.
Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.
  • 39/26 is a low enough gear in this country, when I started you could only have a 42 inner chainring and a 23 sprocket (28 for cyclo-cross)
