Webcam question...

...for a smarter person than me. I know we have computer savvy people on here so here goes. Bought a Microsoft LifeCam VX-700 as the laptop doesn't have a built-in webcam. Was recommended it in Currys (didn't try to sell me something expensive) and it seemed simple. It is supposed to be plug and play but I'm not getting anything. It doesn't show up in 'Computer' - 'Devices with removable storage'. It's visible in Control Panel - Hardware and Sound - View devices and printers, but clicking on it doesn't do anything to turn it on. I'm running Windows 7 and the device is shown as being compatible. I know I'm a bit of a Luddite but this has me stumped. Any help greatly appreciated and thanks in advance. G.
