Which Gear Cables

The time has come to change the gear cable inner and outers on my mountain bike, I do look after them but after about 12 months the outers get a little worn with the grit that gets in between the inner and outer. I know you cant stop this as dust and dirt will get in esp with open cable ends on the top tube and seat stay. A single outer will be better as there would only be two points for dust to get in but the bike isn't set up for this.

So are there better system than cables out there that can be retro fitted to standard mechs and shifter or is it a matter of sticking with what I have and just change the lot every now and then?

Goodridge do a set of sealed gear cables, basically there's an extra mid-layer.

Alternatively, I've been using XTR cable set which come with rubber seals on the exposed parts and very very very smooth shifting. Also, quite cheap compared to a sealed set

I fitted a set of the Gore Ride-On cables a month ago after my cables became full up with Peak district grit. They're a fully sealed system with a full length mid-layer and sealed ends.

They're expensive but the changes are now super smooth and lighter than ever (even when the bike was brand new).

XTR are reasonably priced and very effective... Only downer is that the outer comes pre-cut into seemingly random lengths. There's enough outer in the pack to do a fully enclosed rear cable run, but because it's cut up you can't use any of it if you're fully enclosed and you need to buy extra. That's crap frankly.

Hi all, thanks for the heads up, I've been using XTR cable sets, I think I'll be going Gore or Goodrich next to see how it goes, I like the idea of the full length gore inner.

another option and superb for the money are transfil black snake. can be had for less than £12 a set and come with the liner and nosed ferrules to cover the exposed lengths, also come with coated inners too. very slim and light, smooth cables.

Just fitted the Goodridge system and can tell you now it won't be as effective as the Gore Ride-On which I had on the other bike and never touched once setup. The Goodridge system doesn't have the same level of sealing to keep the crud out. Look on ebay for the Gore system as they are much cheaper.

3 meters of SP41 from the lbs (sp41 is XTR outer) and a couple of std inners all for under a tenner and run full outers, job done!
i run XTR inners on mine too for extra light shifting but they arnt too cheap at £6 each,
but full outers solves the issue of mud and grit ingress !

sram flak jackets been using them for years the outers tent to stiffen up after time, also tryed the Goodridge little larger osd and stiff from word go, not to bad but a little more weight, using jagwire at the moment sofar so good, still silky smooth after 600miles.
