I'm looking for some deep rimmed road wheels, preferably carbon with an alloy braking surface and not too deep a profile. They're mainly for sportives and group rides and I don't want to spend the earth. Planet X have Mavic Cosmic Carbone SL's at £599 at the moment which looks attractive and they've been my first choice on the wish list for a while, but I've seen a few pairs of Kooka Carbas on eBay and at a couple of online shops recently and wondered if anyone had any experience of them?

They're significantly less than even the reduced price of the Mavics £350 is the best I've seen), have a lower profile (38mm v 50mm) are about the same weight and look fairly attractive, but I can't really find any reviews. I'm 85kg and they're going on an S-Works Roubaix. Any thoughts much appreciated! :D

I'd get the Mavics. Apart from the Kookas being an unknown quantity, there's also the risk of problems with the wheels (how do you get Kookas off ebay fixed if they go wrong?), and the issue of resale value. Cosmics will always sell second hand for good money, not so the kookas.

£599 is an excellent deal, I'd get in there if I were you.

    wot he said.
  • Thanks for the suggestions so far - much appreciated. Graham Weigh is one of the shops selling the Kookas so I'm not unduly concerned over the after sales if I bought through them. I'd really like to know if anyone is using them on their bike?

The Mavics do look tempting but it's £250 more... However; buy cheap, buy twice and all that... :D
