I have decided that my first two jobs are:

1. Completely re-cable the brakes on my GT MTB.
To do this am I best to buy a cable kit specifically made up for Shimano brakes or should I buy a couple of suitable cables and a long length of outer? Is brake outer the same is gear outer and can you buy it in bulk. Can you buy the end caps and ferrules? Is MTB outer the same as road bike outer?

2. Replace the twisted Tiagra mech on my road bike.
The mech had an altercation with the rear wheel and wrecked the hangar. The LBS straightened the mech as best he could, replaced it and reset the indexing. However it still has a twist and before I pass the bike to my son I want to sort it. The bike is two years old and has been used regularly.
Do I simply buy a new mech and replace and re-index or should I recable (no issues with the gear changes)?

Additionally is there a good place to buy consumables like brake pads and cables. I bought disk break pads from
http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/
but they don't seem to do cables.

To try and answer some of your questions...

On road bikes, brake and gear cables are different. Brake cables (inners and outers) are bigger/thicker. I can only assume it;s the same for MTB.

Any decent LBS will sell both inners and outers in bulk. Just tell them how much outer you need and they cut it to length. (The inners are obviously one-off cables).

You don't need to buy a 'kit' - just go in and ask for a MTB brake inner and a length of outer (specify brake outer). You may not even need new outers.

    Grease the cable before installing.

As to question 2 - yes, just buy a new mech and install. As long as the existing cable feeds into it no problem, then no need for a new cable.

I buy my cheap cables from local bike shops. Pads I buy off ebay - whatever is cheapest at the time.
