I can get a set of Avid juicy 5's new without rotors for £50, I currently run Shimano M575's wich where aright but found them really spoungy all the time but they where powerfull (To me anyway, first hydrolic brakes) Is it worth gettin Avid juicy 5's for £50 without rotors? and sell the shimano's to my mate.
The only riding i do is riding around the streets with my mates and the ocasional off roadin but no serious braking. The bike is a Kona Hoss too.

Have you tried bleeding the Shimano's?
They are by no means the best brakes out there but they are decent0 -

Im currently waiting for my Dad to get me 2 syringes so i can bleed em.0 -
You don't need syringes for 575's, you just need the tool and some mineral oil and the correct size torx and hex keys (IIRC the bleed port is a torx key)
You will need this and some mineral fluid, make sure you don't use DOT fluid, it will destroy the seals.
Level the lever on the bar, take out the bleed port screw from the top of the lever making sure the little o-ring is out as well. Fill the tool about half full with mineral oil (making sure the plunger is in place) then screw it into the bleed port. Remove the plunger and pump the lever until air bubbles stop coming out. Replace the plunger and unscrew the tool, making sure the o-ring is not stuck inside. Then replace the o-ring and bleed port screw and return the lever to it's original position.
Easiest brakes in the world to bleed.0 -
Right, Bought one of those, will try it when it comes. Thanks.
Ive already got half a pot of halfords mineral oil, will that do?0 -
As long as it is Mineral oil and not DOT fluid, it will be fine0

There shall be alot of fluid everywhere an a few swear words in the air when it comes
It should be fun :?0 -
Just a bit of advice, take the brake pads out so you can't contamiate them by accident, it happens to the best of us.0
-
No need to, you are no where near the caliper, you are only working with the lever.
Just, if you have then, put in new pads before bleeding them otherwise you may overfill the system0 -
i run shimano m575 brakes, and after a good bleed, they improved 10 fold. easily as good as my old mans avid 3's, but not sure what they would be lilke next to 5's. let me know if you get them and how you get on with them.Am i strange in that i actually ENJOY going up hills? Yes, yes i am.
PS: Full - Sussers are for SOFTIES AND BIG GIRLS0 -
Keep the Shimanos, dont bother with Juicy 3s or 5s as an upgrade. The 5s may be more powerful, but from experience the Juicy range have been fairly unreliable. Bleeding is fairly difficult, pistons stick regularly giving uneven pad wear, sometimes air just wont leave the system however many times you bleed them. Also, they use DOT fluid which is corrosive as well, and if you want to bleed them you need a kit from AVID which costs about 50quid for a couple of syringes and a couple of adaptors.
I have worked on literally hundreds of pairs of Juicy brakes at work, and I reckon probably 30-40% of these have had issues.0 -
I have got Juicy 3's & Juicy 7's.
They are ok but seem to be unreliable. I would either fix the Shimanos or do what I am doing and get some used Hope mono mini's, get them serviced and enjoy some top qualiy brakes.
Another good deal I saw on CRC is Shimano XT brakes for £69Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

Bleeding isn't difficult when you do it properly, again, with air, if you bleed them properly air will leave the system, DOT fluid isn't that bad, it has a higher boiling point than mineral oil as well and the Formula kit fits Avids and I got mine for 15 quid0 -
I think ive contamiate my front pads, Ive been googling because £16 is a bit steep for pads for a pushbike when my brake pads on my hornet are like 5x bigger are £19 for HH sintered ones! Do these fit http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=35412 ? They look the same.0
-
yes they will fit as the 515 and 575 take the same pad. Superstar do the same pads for the same price in sintered .

Anyone bought anything off Chain reaction cycles? I bought the bleed kit xmas day and they still aint came yet  I bought brake pads from Superstar's on Tuesday and they are here  CRC are very slow0

Well they won't have been there Xmas day and probably not Boxing Day
They aren't very consistent atm though, took almost three weeks for a hub and rim to arrive but only 3 days for some other stuff (by the same courier and similar sized package)0 -

I've never used CRC so not sure what courier they use but the week before christmas our local DHL depot had 22 thousand consignments yet to deliver for christmas eve, they are around 2 weeks behind and i know City Link were 7 days behind. The weather just caused chaos as they couldn't get enough drivers out on the roads for long enough to complete deliverys. What if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? What if to get to heaven, you had to brave hell? What if everything you've ever wanted cost you everything you've ever achieved? Would you still go there?0 -

A lot of couriers are not working this week. I would guess that anything coming by royal mail is comingnthrough, anything else will be through after next wednesday (picked up tuesday).0

I'm thinking of swapping my Juicy 5's for something else. Can any IS mount brake be used with the Avid rotors I have and whats the best value for money brakes to be looking at ?
Cheers.0 -
yes, any brake as it's the adapters which differ and you already have those. yes you can use any brand rotors provided the mount is the same size for the disc0
