Not a rant..
But can I take a car trolley jack back to a different store?
Its unused and still boxed, just I can't take it back to where I bought it as i'm going home tomorrow so would like to use a different store.
cheers.

Nah, 1st thing I checked!
I might still keep the jack, undecided atm. But if I do decide to take it back, I have to lug it back up north or it'll be too late!0 -

Perhaps he's packing bags for a charity like they have in Tesco0 -
ring your local halfords and ask to see if you can return the unopened item, if they say no ask to speak to the manager or senior member of staff.
i must warn you however that any refunds or exchange (credit note or changeing the item) that they may offer you is a gesture of good will.
if the trolley jack is as described on the packageing (lift capacity, colour, reach or what ever) which i assume it to be then then they are not obligated to refund you for your mistaken purchase.
some shops will allow returns of unopened items and some will let you return goods to a different shop from where the original purchase was made (independent franchise may be independent from the rest of the chain), but these shops are going beyond their legal obligations (different rules apply to internet /mail order/door to door purchases)
my advice to anyone who is about to make a purchase which they are unsure about is to talk to the manager of the store and ask them before you buy the item if you can return it if for example you dont like it/ doesnt match the rest of your house/ colour clashes with your carpet etc.etc.
this agreement with the manager will form part of the purchase contract and if they agree will give you legal protection if you do decide to return the item for a refund at a later date.0
