Road v MTB pedals

I've never ridden with any clipless system before, and have just plumped for the SPD-SL PDR 540s on my Boardman. Due to pick it up tomorrow. They were on offer so got them for about £15. Should I just get a set of A520's instead? How hard are the SL's to get used to?0

50% or more of my riding is touring / commuting for which spd are ideal. The other 50% is sunday road rides and I stick to the spd's. It is always worth having at least one road shoe wearer in your riding group though, just to give everyone a laugh when they try to walk into the cafe!

Thanks for the posts and opinions on the pedals.
I bought the A520s and I think it's the right choice. They look like there is more of a platform than the standard SPD pedal which I am used to.
As regards the shoes I agree what has been said about the stiffness of the soul. The shoes I've got have a carbon soul and are very stiff which I prefer. In addition being able to walk in them is a bonus and I've not had to buy new ones!
The comment on the cleats is a good one. I prefer the SH56 as you can un-clip both ways and they are definately smoother than the SH51.

Well after picking up my boardman yesterday, the staff gave me m520s instead of 540s. After reading this thread these might be better for my first foray into clipless.0

I'm a fan of M520 SPD double sided pedals. A tip is to just give them a quick spray of wd40 every few days. I've never had a problem with them.CAAD9
