Without a pedantic argument, yes*.
*I make no claims about digital signal transmission cables. My only reference is listening to systems where all cables are carrying the analog signal, ie the D-A conversion is done at source.
It was meant as a rhetorical question...the debate usually ends up in two distinct camps; if you can't hear a difference you must be deaf vs If you can hear a difference its your imagination. So, back OT - what is the decision on the Quad? Keep it or replace it?0 -
I took a little bit of time....
strolled around currys
considered the dozens of potential purchases that in reality are probably uneccessary (new frameset springs to mind)
thought about the fact that these days when every something breaks - mostly they just get replaced.
Thought how great that they actually still fix them....
Thougth about the lovely sound, if rather dated way they worked
To be honest though - what swung it really was the fact that they were my Dads from new - and he's not around any more...............
So they're being fixed - for the first time in years my Christmas present to myself is not sport/cycling related0 -
Cool! How long is it going to take?0
-
three week turnaround - I'm OK waiting
I even browsed in a second hand record shop at lunch !!!0 -
Repair it and have the "caps" upgraded etc.0
-
Staying on topic, I'd definitely repair but the old guy with the soldering iron must have some expenive overheads or a crack habit if he's charging £300!
And straying off topic, my children are 21 years old and my Mission 707 speakers are two years older than that. Unfortunately the surround rubber (on the speakers, not the children) has suddenly failed. I can buy replacement rubber but suspect a hamfisted DIY repair would sound crap.
Anyone done such a repair or had one done?
And has anyone tried to upgrade their children?
Merry Christmas everyoneWhere the neon madmen climb0 -
Colleague of mine is a Linn fanatic. His HiFi is easily worth more than his house. When he starts droning on about crossovers and active speakers all I hear is a faint whooshing sound as it all goes straight over my head. Anyway, convinced by a Linn dealer demo, he's just converted all his CDs to FLAC files on a wireless NAS drive and Ebayed his CDs and the CD player. Controls the whole thing with an i-Pad.
I must go and have a listen one day.0 -
I tried to upgrade one of my children when they prodded a beryllium tweeter on one of my speakers. A 1200 quid repair! Thank god for insurance...0

Can be done by plenty of competent repair people, BUT like the OP here, cost effectiveness is an issue. 22 year old Mission speakers may not be worth spending the money on, as it will be expensive to do for sure.Open One+ BMC TE29 Seven 622SL On One Scandal Cervelo RS0 -
Whatever you want to spend yer cash on is fair enough. But in 'blind' tasting/hearing/touching/smelling we do far, far worse than you would think. So called 'experts' can't tell the difference between their own arse and a whole in the ground so what our motley crew of home listeners can discern is questionable.
People like to own expensive things and that is all well and good but i'd be interested to see how some of our more anal members did in a blind 'hearing'.
I suspect they would prefer not to take part in such an experiment.
Buy the best you can reasonably afford I suppose and after that, worry about something that actually matters.0 -

Bit like racing on an expensive bike then eh? (that's sarcasm in case you can't spot/feel/hear it)
Sadly a not very well informed post.0 -

Yes, spending more on something does not make it better, what am i thinking. Ill swap the carbon bikes for Asda's best, change the Audi for a Kia, the Baume for a Timex and the HiFi (as you point out) for a 80's boom box.
That you for saving me so much money, I owe you .0 -

Yes, glad we agree. Up to a point.
Wouldn't go as far as riding an ASDA bike like you would like to. £1500 would pretty much buy a bike that a lot on here would struggle to differentiate from a £3000 steed. Myself very much included.
Same with your 'Hi Fi' (you sound like my Dad). £1500 will easily buy a system that again, many would struggle to tell apart from a £3000 rig.
But you can stick with the trusty 3D super woofer if you like.
Merry Christmas.0 -
Indeed Jim, many cannot hear the difference, but the rest can, and easily.0

I can't tell the difference with all these new fangled gizmos. But then again i walk around in an old style diving suit all the time.May be i should get a newer more expensive diving suit?TT photos http://www.flickr.com/photos/steverob/0

Managed to kill the pre-amp part of my Arcam amp, so now am routing the Squeezebox through the power amp bit of the Arcam A85.
Took a couple of hours to get used to the new sound but Eminem and Marilyn Manson still makes me want me to kill someone and 'Sweet Child O' Mine' still makes me cry. As Squill said 'trust your ears' its about the music not the technology.0 -

Of course it is! My sony viao with a correctly set up media player (not itunes) into a cheap ish DAC knocks spots musically off my Cyrus CDP! It's all horses for courses and all that.0
