Dura Ace Cables with Ultegra Shifters?

Does anyone know if the top end Dura Ace gear & brake cable sets are compatible with the Ultegra SL groupset? I know it's probably a stupid question as they're just cables but they look pretty chunky in the packet and I want to make sure before spending £50. I've had a look around on the net and can't find any definitive advice and Shimano's 'designed to work with Dura Ace' isn't very helpful on the compatibility front

Help is much appreciated!

  • Yep - they will work fine.
  • When my Ultegra rear mech cable broke i replaced it with a Dura-Ace cable set , straight swap , cant tell if its any better really but it works fine.
  • Do you have the Ultegra shifters as well kettrinboy? It's the internal routing with the chunky cable housing that worries me, I'm sure it'll be fine though :)
  • No ive got the now old fashioned 6603 triple shifters,i would still have thought the later 6700 series Ultegra/Dura-ace would be compatible with each other though.

I've been using the Jagwire Racer cable sets in place of the Dura-Ace. About 2/3 the price, more durable, functions as good or better than the DA and also includes rubber frame protectors and ferules. I am also very anal about how well my equipment works and no complaints with the Jagwires in comparison.

I've got well old (2006, whatever model year that was) Ultegra shifters/mech etc on the winter bike and have just fitted spare Dura Ace 7900 cables - all work perfectly.

Again, can't really tell any difference, but at least they are being used as opposed to just sitting in the Big Box of Bits in the garage.

I've used them and they're fine. New cables always feel better though! Only cable I've ever had a problem with was also the most expensive - Gore Ride on snapping in the right hand shifter, requiring the lever to be disassembled in order to get the cable end out! Sure this was co-incidence though. Funnily enough replaced the inner with 7900 as you can't get just the Gore inner, which seems stupid!
