For info, price of some stuff I saw in cycling shop in Perth, Western Australia yesterday (Ozzy dollar is 1.5 to a UK pound so $150 is 100 quid)

Michelin Pro 3 tyres - $100 each
Giordana Carbon Laser bibs $250
Giordana Laser shirt $150
Shimano DA chain (10 speed) $100

Didn`t buy anything :? No wonder the Ozzy cyclists I`ve been out riding with moan about prices, they get together and bulk order from Chain Reaction and get free delivery :)

  • There's a lot of hoo-ha in the press here at the moment with Oz retailers crying poor, blaming "the Internet" for it all. As it stands, the law is that buying something from overseas with an invoice value less than 1000 AUD means exempt from GST and duty. (GST = VAT). For bike parts, duty is nil anyway, only complete bikes are subject to import duty.

I recently had to replace a Campag Super Record 11 sp front derailleur. Rang a local retailer, to be told recommended retail was $449. "We can do a bit better than that though.." was the helpful comment.

4 minutes later I'd logged on and ordered from Ribble, delivered to my door in less than 6 days for $147.00 AUD. That is NOT a typo... there are endless examples. Like a lot of folks here, I've spent thousands shopping on line. Our currency is strong at the moment too, making the deals even better 8)

Same here in NZ. No need to bulk order though. PBK offer free delivery on orders over NZD$70 (<£35) and as in Oz most stuff flies under the GST radar. I'll buy locally when the prices aren't too inflated, but I why would pay NZ$110 for a single folding Gatorskin tyre when I can get two for the less than that (with free postage) on Wiggle?

Blimey. How do the local shops manage to stay in business?
  • free delivery to NZ and OZ?
    talk about great value
i wonder how much it cost on line retailers to post an item to the other side of the world?

To JohnnyAllez and Wheelspinner, it might be expensive, but at least its not F00KIN FREEZIN. :)

I lived in Oz as a kid. To think, if my parents hadnt dragged us back to Blighty I could be riding around in me shorts. :(

It's not the shops that are to blame, but the Australian distributors who are frankly $crewing you. I was working in Sydney a few years ago and went into a bike shop - I laughed out loud at some of the prices - someone is really taking the pi$$.

If I were an Aussie I would be sending some emails to the distributors, mfrs, etc. showing them examples of prices in other countries and asking for an explanation. There may be some legitimate reasons but I highly doubt it. Everyone is losing, (er, maybe someone is getting rich) especially the bike shops. I have seen on the U.S. ebay that sometimes sellers from Oz show up with competitive prices on many other types of products. Something sounds very wrong here.

The aussie Govt are 'supposedly' holding an enquiry into purchases made overseas after some of the big high street retailers threatened to move into online trading from China. It will only be of real value if the investigation also looks at the wider issue of distributorships, price fixing and market manipulation. However I fear that this will be overlooked to appease the retailers - hopefully the $AUD 1000 limit can remain for private individuals.

There is something far wrong when I can buy items from overseas often at large price disparities with the same item bought which could be bought from along the road. Its dependant upon the item being purchased of course but many times when the cost difference is so big, an aussie warranty is irrelevant.

Crazycrank, the distributors, mfrs, etc all know the prices elsewhere - they are all willing participants in the great aussie price scam. LBS cannot source from overseas because they will lose warranty support, etc. and I believe, are between a rock and a hard place - particularly for the smaller ones

LOL :D Just been for a 30 mile spin down the Sunset Coastal drive to Trigg Island, weather mid twenties (7.00am) and warming up :) Cyclists tan coming along nicely :)

Off to buy an extortionately priced Bell cycling helmet for my bro-in-law for Xmas now :( He`s got the cycling bug again, seeing me going out enjoying myself :) Just been to buy another new Trek from the LBS. Funny that a complete bike over here in Oz is almost identical price (UK pound to AU dollar exchange rate of 1.5 ish) to back in the UK, wonder how they fix those prices :?

  • Yeah 26 deg C here today, not a cloud in sky, light breeze.... stuck in the office though. Mind you, was out at 5.20 am for a 40km ride before work, only about 17 deg C then though. A bit nippy. :D

It's not just bike stuff - my 50 quid trainers are closer to 100 over here!

Just had deliveries from CR and Wiggle - CR included rollers - only cost me $40 delivery charge - can't grumble really.

    No - I'm earning in AU$ - it's the cost that's the problem - trust me!

Vittoria Diamante Pro Light tyres for my track bike - one tyre from an Oz bike shop, $90, only $45 from Wiggle, and that gets you free delivery too.

    It's bonkers I tells ya!

I'm more worried about all the really old beaten up Nissan's with odd-coloured dented panels, a brake light with a white bulb in it, and you can't see the driver over the steering wheel!!
