Castle Ring - Cannock Chase. Snowy!

I havent been able to go to my usual trials such as Follow The Dog and Monkey on Cannock chase because A] I smashed up my Civic Type R and B] I have a brand new Golf GTI as a courtesy car so do not want to pop a filthy MTB in the back!
Instead I realised that I have some of the best trails right on my doorstep! Castle Ring is a part of Cannock chase that is around 4.5 miles away from my home, passing through the common.
It has some nice climbs, some technical sections, and some very fun downhills. Just what I love.
I was testing my new setup today, I took the super sticky Maxxis Hi Rollers off the rear and put some Spec Captain XC rubber on instead. The Maxxis were just too draggy.

That brings back memories! Before the days of the Dog we always started at Castle Ring. Used to follow heart of England way to what is now Swinnerton then back.
Lots of people limit themselves to Dog and Monkey, but if you get away there is some cracking riding and scenery to be explored out there.

Know it well. Especially the descent thats quite technical. Love that bit.
We went over Rifle range and down Severn springs yesterday. Again loads of singletrack begging to blasted and with less riders over it this snow is great fun.
The dog and Monkey are ice rinks at the moment, hardly worth it.4 wheels bad
2 wheels good
1 wheel for fun0 -
The one thing I don't understand from your post is.........
"I have a brand new Golf GTI as a courtesy car so do not want to pop a filthy MTB in the back!"
It's not yours....You don't have to clean it....Use it and abuse it...Hand it back filthy....Simples0 -
Yes there is some good riding over towards the Ring although obv. not on the Ring itself tut tut
Was over there a couple of weeks ago and was approached by a bloke in a 'Cannock Chase Rescue Service' jacket with a mental Alsatian. I was prepared for a 'you shouldn't be riding round here you know' moment but he proceeded to point me in the direction of some quality off-piste singletrack. Result!0
