What tubular tyres?

Recently bought me some PRO 50mm tub wheels and looking to get some 'decent' tubs mounted.
Wheels will generally be used for racing, occasional TT (when too windy for the disc/tri) and i guess sunny day training rides so looking for something that is fast but wont wear out in 5mins.
Price is also an issue, i'd like to get Vittoria EVO's but at £50+ a pop i wont be spending that, i would say my budget will be £60-70 for the pair. Also i dont really knowif it matters but i'll be taping them not glueing.
If you could also direct me to any on-line deals i'd be most grateful.

(For instance, Black and Blue ones on eBay for £35 each.

That's what I've gone for for my first tubs - I like the Open Corsas and now I'm going to try the real thing. I got mine from Shinybikes for similar money, plus a cheapo Vittoria Rally to carry as a preglued spare.
Going tubular means some compromises on practicality so I figure I may as well get the best tubs I can afford.0 -

What tape did you use? I have gone for the Vittorias for my first set of tubs for racing and wasn't sure whether to glue or tape them.

CX are a great racing tub but maybe a bit pricey for training. Conti competitions are pretty good but not as good a ride as the CX.
Would recommend glue rather than tape, tape has been known to rip the carbon off rims (tore a strip off a lightweight I was using!)
Buy some glue and learn to glue your tubs on, much better in the long run for many reasons. Check out weight weenies for more details.0 -

+1.... I'll cast another vote for sprinters. Good sturdy tire, usable for just about all road conditions(including races), won't break your bank. I also like Tufo tires. Haven't had any problems with then and they are easier to glue on becauase they don't twist inside out when you inflate them. At least that's my take on tubs. I've also used the Tufo tape(on carbon too) without problems. Makes the job a whole lot easier, much less messy, and the tires are ready to ride right after you mount and inflate them.0 -

Vittoria CX and glue - it's been the way to go for years and still is IMO - have never liked any other brand of tubs as much, and tape just feels like a compromise when you're attaching such nice rubber to your rims.0

I would stick to a 22/23mm wide tub for racing - narrow tubs are fine for going in straight lines but don't offer as much grip when cornering. The smaller air pocket also means that impact punctures are more likely - the kind of impact that could crack a carbon rim.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

IMHO, too lightweight, too narrow. Go with 21 or 23 wide tires. I use 25 wide Tufo tubular clinchers and get a great, smooth ride from them. Spending money on lightweight tires is not the answer. Like I said before, Conti Sprinters or some other brand that has a little "meat" is a bettter option. Thin, light, flimsy tires will disappoint you in the end(money wise and problem wise). IMHO.0 -

i used these theVittoria Corsa Evo CX 320tpi - http://www.shinybikes.com/bikes/vittori ... bular.html for TTs and road races last year - the rear lasted one season about 1000 miles and the front is only slightly worn
I bought the Pave - http://www.shinybikes.com/bikes/vittori ... bular.html to replace the Corsas - they are meant to be a bit more robust - & they look cool 8) but be almost as good.
I bought a couple of cheap vittoria tubs as spares.... Rallys i think - they are pretty rubbish. a big bulge by the valve - havent used them. I got a couple of cheap continental Giros as spares that seem much better as a cheap tub.0 -
Don't get confused over the various Corsa tubs - I bought CRs when I thought they were CXs at a good price, not as nice a tyre.

I run 320tpi Corsa Evo CX's on my summer/race bike. I did nothing but training rides last season (wasn't fit enough to race) and they did me well. I'd say if you can afford that extra £20 or so it's worth going for them.0

Vittoria Corsa EVO CX II in 23mm every time. Unless it's winter in which case Pave CGs in 24mm or 27mm if your frame will take them. The ride is dramatically better than Continental and durability is pretty good in my experience. I've picked them up at £36 and £39 respectively.
I've always used tape (Tufo Extrema) and never rolled a tub or had any problems including plenty of long, fast and technical descents.0 -
The trouble with the sprinter and other cheaper tubs is that they are completely sealed so Im not sure that they can be repaired. I use Vittoria Evos and they are stitched and taped and I have them repaired for £12. So the cheaper option may not be so cheap after all. Please correct me if Im wrong.Pegoretti

I believe you're wrong. I've used Conti Sprinters and many other tubs for years and IF they had some decent tread on them when they flatted I sent them to a guy in Florida,
he put new tubes in, sewed them back up and sent them back. 10 dollars a tire if I remember. The only tubs that can't be fixed(other than injected with sealant) are Tufo's.
Tufo's are the only ones that "aren't" sewn up. As far as I know.0
