I popped into my closest lbs today for an inner tube to carry as a spare, I asked for a tube to fit a 700x23 tyre and without checking in the bag I paid for it and left. I have just checked the tube and its a Kenda 700x28c will this still fit my tyres or should I take it back?

  • Sounds like my local bike shop. Smaller outlets will not carry a decent range of sizes, and they gave you that one on the assumption that it will work satisfactorily.

Go on the internet and maybe order yourself 3 or 4 spares of the correct size. And do your homework on valves; they come in different types and different lengths.

In my noobier days, for months I rode without realising with a 37x700 inner tube in my 28x700 tire, but never had a problem, so I reckon if inner tube size is thicker than your tire size you can still get by fine, although might be more of a problem if you go for very high tire pressure I would imagine.

The quoted size on a tube is often meaningless. Just puff a little air into it and compare it to your 23mm tyre. If it is near the same size it will be fine, if it is massively bigger it will be a bit of a bugger to fit inside the tyre so get a smaller one.

Take it back - it's too big.

You want one that reads 700x18-25C

The 28C one won't fit your wheel. I've tried it!
