Do i need a Car?

Just thinking, due to a growing intrest in Mountain biking and wanting to visit various trail centres on my own or with a few mates (all bikers like me) do i sell my Motorbike and get a car.
Now i only use my bike for commuting and weekend blasts and if i need to do shopping i just jump on the train to places.
Bike costs me £190 a year insurance, £15 a year tax and the biggest cost is probably £400 on tyres per year.
Now i have been offered a 1.6 litre Vauxhall Vectra, and this is going to cost me £1800 fully comp to insure per year and god knows how much to tax.
Now I'm not on a huge wage at the moment as i'm still doing my nurse training, get between £600 to £1100 a month wages with 400/500 outgoings.
Hold both car and bike licence. Moral of the story is, do i really need a car to visit various trail centres?

A car is a silly, but neccesary part of being a "mountain biker"
Without a car you'd just be a (ugh, shivers) "cyclist"

Dont know if it is legal in the UK but ive seen a few people in the states with bike racks on their motorbikes
something like this

I've only got a car for biking. But, most of the time I end up getting lifts anyway So that's the alternative, have some mates who like driving.
Oh and how many miles are you doing to eat £400 worth of tyres?Uncompromising extremist0 -

Thought it might be a resounding yes Well unfortunatley i may have to give the motorbike away to just pay for the bloody insurance.
£1800 this year £1100 the year after and then down to a more respectable £500 in the 3rd year, unless i crash!
seems going for a less boy racer Vectra 1.6 and fully comp instead of tpft makes things cheaper.
Best make the most of the final months on my motorbike0 -
Ouch I didn't realise you said it was a 1.6! You might be quicker walking...
How old are you?0 -
Is the vectra free?
If not search the adds for a low mileage biddy mobile.
For example an m reg vw polo 1.3 with s/h and only 23,000 miles for £295, will be my new throwaway transport.Visit Clacton during the School holidays - it's like a never ending freak show.
Who are you calling inbred?0 -
why a vectra of all things?????????0

Vectra's free yeah, Grandpa is giving it away when he gets a new Astra.
And I'm 24, got my car licence when i was 17 but drove for two years then got into powered two wheels
Got 5 years of NCB on a bike and obviously 0 now for a car.0 -
Ncb should be transferable, try bennetts or direct line.
Vectra isn't that bad, nice, normal, cheap to run and doesnt attract unwanted attention.Visit Clacton during the School holidays - it's like a never ending freak show.

Some places will let you use a bike NCB... But they do tend to be more expensive.
Mounting a pushbike on a motorbike wouldn't be that hard, all you need is a tame welder. But, then you need to carry the kit as well, and stash your motorbike kit when you get there, which starts to get more hassly as you're going to end up with big panniers most likely as well as the bike. Which is all doable but becomes a pain. One of the Santa Cruz designers made himself a bike rack for his SV, nice bit of kit but then I guess it's easier if you're an engineer There used to be a pic of him up Deal's Gap with his knee down on the yellow line and his Blur sticking into oncoming trafficUncompromising extremist0 -
How old is the Vectra - why full comp insurance? How about 3rd party only?ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0

Erm its a Vectra B i can't remember the exact reg, think its a R reg so 1999 and its done 65,000 miles. Been serviced by the book. T&T for 12 months.
its £2988 for TPO whereas its 1800 for comp.0 -

i was thinking the same thing :?0 -
Possible, seen it numerous times where TPO was more expensive than comp.0

Same for when i insure a bike! I'd rather be fully comp anyway.0

How can insuring against Risk A be more expensive than insuring against Risk A + B + C + D?
Can you get them to add house, contents, health, bike & pet insurance - you'll be down to a tenner in no time.... :?ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
My comp cover was better than the best tpf&t offer I could find (even from the same companies). I can only assume that either the comp cover is underwritten by different providers, or alternatively they think "Hey, this guy's obviously taking things seriously and planning forward, making responsible decisions. Therefore, he's probably a safe, accident-conscious driver and so is a low risk.
Though actually the thought process is "I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm probably going to hit a school bus or something. Better get lots of insurance"Uncompromising extremist0 -
Mind you - there's no logic to insurance. My race car road cover was £140 a year unlimited mileage. I probably do less than 100 miles on the road (bedding in brakes etc) so I asked how much it would be for 1500 miles (least they'll do). That'll be £98. But when your certificate comes it'll say unlimited mileage because that's all we do on this policy...!ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0

Fully comp was cheaper on my Golf too, but only by about 30 quid.0

No. Cars are a money pit, don't buy one just because you want to visit trail centres now and then. Bum a lift, share petrol costs with your mates who already have cars. Maybe even pay them to take you. Add the cost of petrol, tax, the inevitable tyres, exhausts etc and you'll find a lot of your disposable income vanishing. The only reason I keep my car is for family stuff. If I didn't have kids, I'd get shut of it.
Oh, and I think you'll be gutted if you get rid of your motorbike.0 -
To put a spanner in the works, Missus is getting a car next month when she passes her test. Now this will be her mobile salon as she is a Hairdresser, so i'm sure it will be a dumping ground, so maybe i keep my bike and use her car to get muddy.
Plus are places like Gisburn ok Train wise? I go to Billinge and Rivington by Train.
Plus i know its only a 125, and its Korean, but look at it................. so much sexier than the cars i'll be able to get insured on

How in the name of god's balls are you spending £400 per year on tyres for a 125?Uncompromising extremist0
