I'm considering buying a FSR Expert from Hargrove. Upgrade from my existing hardrock. Is the FSR a good buy for XC work and general riding ?

Yes, nice light frame, decent parts and generally well regarded.0

No need to go for the fancy rear "brain suspension"
Just buy the Comp and you will be more than happy with it0 -
Have you ever ridden a brain-equipped bike? I have ridden the new camber, 120mm travel with no brain, and have just bought an Epic because of the better ride. The brain makes it ride like a hardtail. It makes massive sense on a relatively short travel bike used for a bit of everything. And if you dont think it helps a certain terrain, turn it off! FSRXcs are good bikes, You wil be happy with an XC if its for "general" riding as many people say.0

Is this "brain" a bit like Fox's propedal?0

The Brain is a valved shock that 'senses' terrain and locks out when required - though there are different versions, and has varied over the years.
Something to fix a problem spesh says FSR doesn't have anyway...0 -
I tried the stumpy with the brain, couldnt tell the difference or at least not enough to warrant the extra cash so went with the model I have now0
