I don't use an MP3 player or anything similar when road cycling, we all know it's a good time to reflect and muse on life - between gasping and grimacing in my case!

The other day while coasting through leafy North Hertfordshire, all of a sudden Kirstie Macoll's "Walking Down Madison" jumped into my head for no reason and wouldn't FO again :?

I just wondered if anyone else gets this musical regression effect while wheeling around?!
2011 Bianchi D2 Cavaria in celeste (of course!)
2011 Enigma Echo 57cm in naked Ti
2009 Orange G2 19" in, erm orange

Often yes,and it really helps as i find myself travelling further without noticing as i am distracted by singing the song.

I had the song "Thomas O Malley" from the Aristocats in my head last time out riding. I hated myself. :?

The phenomenom is known as an Earworm. BBC Radio 4 had a segment about them in one of their science programmes earlier this year.

The good news: The end up singing songs you haven't heard for a while (this may not be a good thing after all)

The bad news: There are scientists working on the science of earworms and how to make a catchy song. This knowledge will be used by the advertising industry.
FCN 3: Raleigh Record Ace fixie-to be resurrected sometime in the future
    FCN 4: Planet X Schmaffenschmack 2- workhorse
FCN 9: B Twin Vitamin - winter commuter/loan bike for trainees

    I'm hungry. I'm always hungry!
  • Rhythm of pedalling and breathing often bring choonz into my head, especially this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovCK97hFiSI when I'm on a long climb for some unknown reason. It's great.

I always come up with new songs while I'm riding. When I get home, by the time I've got to my room and grabbed my guitar, they're irretrievably gone. One of these days, I'm going to remember one of them for long enough to record it...

Why don't you just take your guitar with you?

This is true, I get the odd one myself, BBC 6 Music try to exorcise them every day on the breakfast show at 8.am.

Theres a whole website devoted to cataloging them somewhere...
