chainset and casette

My eldest son wants me to replace the chainset (crankset) on his Saracen, front and rear derailleurs and casette.
I don't want to spend a fortune but he has two "needs", as he has learning difficulties he insists on a chain guard on the front just a circular one by the peds. I believe schimano do them, and where possible I want to keep under £200.
Any ideas please. Thanks.

Fit a triple chainset and replace the big-ring with a bash-guard? Stops your calf getting into the teeth/oily chain and can still look quite cool?

As has been said, get a triple with bolted on rings and replace the largest with a Bash, my daughters commuter runs MTB drivetrain (42/32/22 chain rings) so we got a road bike crankset (52/42/32) and replaced the largest ring with one from Salsa (their 'crossing guard') to keep the gearing the same.
Alternatively many of the mid range chainsets come with an attached guard as a fourth ring such as this one which we have on the other daughters bike.

On the link above you'll see some options for 'bolt on's that can be added to MTB chainsets - but is his MTB or roadie?.

Thank you.
But do you also get what you pay for, with the plethora of makes/types within makes what the heck how would you decide.Peds with ipods, natures little speed humps

As your using it as a trouser guard, most will do a perfectly OK job, the only issue with teh plastic ones bolted to the ring is a heavy impact will break them.
Is it going onto an MTB chainset or roadie? Do you need to keep the largest gear for use? (on a commuter that is usually yes!)
Until we know the gearing needs it makes it harder to give more than general advise!
