Double ring woes.

Is a bash guard essential for reliability with a double ring set-up?

I'm just having problems setting up my double ring set up well.

I have blackspire nuvi rings, sram x7 2x10 front mech, 9 speed chain.

I have to have my limit screw set in so much to stop the chain coming off the top ring, that shifting is hard work on my thumb.

I was 100% the combination should work bang on.

Is it a case of tinkering some more or getting a bash ring?

Reliability is paramount, i don't want the chain coming off, the front mech should be taking care of it though.

Cheers for any input.

Try reducing the limit-screw fractionally to leave room for just enough overshift to make it easier to reach the outer ring, but without falling over the top.

Or can the front mech can be lowered closer to the chainring so it leaves no room for the chain to jump off?

Grip/Twist-shift would solve the sore thumb problem :-)

Did you shorten the chain for the 2x10 setup? Helps keep it on if you do. Bash certainly not required but I still stick a light one on mine.

Try playing with the angle of the Fr mech. Twisting it so that the back of it is slightly further out should assist in the shifting, without compromising the gear usage too much (you might find Big > BIg rubs a little).

Isn't the chainring spacing slightly different on the 2x10, hence why SRAM nominally said you couldn't use XX front mech/shifters with a converted 2x9 chainset. It's close enough that it will work, but may mean front mech set up needs to be more precise.

    Deore M590, triple.

I don't think chain line is coming into it, the same proble was occuring regardless of what ring i was in on the rear.

Anyway, i think things are excellent now.

Clean shifts, can't derail the chain if i try really hard.

    I think job is done.

Don't know what you did but possibly the height of the front mech was wrong.

Normally if the front mech is a regular 3-ring type you must install it as if the largest ring was still there, i.e. higher than looks right.

    Less cable tension.
