How do I make my photo into less than 10 K

I have got a photo which I think would be a better avatar than my current one. The trouble is that bikeradar expect the photo to be 10K or less. How can I change a photo of 1200K into one of 10K ? And why can't they just accept my original photo and fit it into their thingys. Sorry if I got too technical there. And no, I don't remember how I did the original one.

    open your picture in any photo editing programme (e.g. microsoft photo manager) and look in the tools menu for the resize option. a good one will tell you how big your image is as you reduce it.

    if you want to keep the original, remember to save a copy first.

    Also crop it to a square so it fits nicely.
