Is there any reason not to do this?

My phone charger consists of a plug with a USB port on it and then a USB to mini USB to connect the phone to the charger. Can I plug my ipod USB cable into the charger and use it to charge my ipod from the mains?

Check the voltage/current ratings against the USB standard. If it's putting out normal/expected voltage and current, then it'll be fine. The only worry I'd have is that it could, in theory, be using a USB plug but actually provide a higher current than standard to charge the phone faster, which the iPod may not cope too well with.0

depends on above.
i've got an htc hero with the same type of charger, the charger works fine with an ipod nanowhoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons0 -
Hmm it's rated at 5.1V/850mA which is higher than the USB standard (apparently max 5V/500mA) so I'll leave it. I have a dedicated iPod mains charger so I'll take that as well, I was just trying to cut down on bulk in my case."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0

To be honest, it would *probably* work fine. I'd most likely do it on my own things, but I wouldn't want to say for you to do it only to have it break.0

Sensible advice ^
Though I'd be pretty angry with a manufacturer for using USB sockets and more than 5v, as they'd probably f%ck a lot of people's gadgets. In my experience, phone manufacturers mess around a lot with the signal lines so gadgets will only charge from "official" chargers (Samsung and Apple in particular have done a lot of this), but I've never known one go beyond +5v on the power.
I find mains>USB iphone chargers seem to be fine for other gadgets, HTC phones, etc.0 -
try it and find out.
i do that all the time and it work fine."It is not impossible, its just improbable"

If your ipod is one with a metal backplate, it will get sh*t hot off using that, i would even go as far as saying possibly hot enough to be a fire hazard.
Using higher amplitudes can also reduce the battery life due to the heat it creates (so i hear, don't quote me on this one!).0
