Hi,
Attempting (badly) to build up a Commencal Meta 5.5 frame, just putting everything together when I realised the dropout's wouldn't take a standard QR. On the Techbook it says that I need "135mmx10mm or 135mmx12mm"

I have Hope Pro2 Hubs so I can get a conversion kit. I am a little unsure as to what I need. Is it;

Hope Conversion Kits Pro 2 10mm Thru Rear
(http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=18761)

and

10mm Rear QR Through Axle
http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_ ... cts_id=287

How can I check the dropouts will fit this as I am confused as to how a thicker QR will work when the standard QR can't even drop into the dropouts? Cheers!

well a standard Qr rear is 10mm....

or does it need a 10mm through axle? if yes then you should have an axle with the frame.

like wise with a 12mm through axle.

yes the Pro 2 can be converted.

have you actually tried fitting the wheel?

  • Does it have the maxle dropouts?

Its either 135mmx12mm maxle or or 135mmx10mm standard.
  • Ah ok, quite confused now then!

I bought the frame 2nd hand so maybe there is something wrong with the dropout if a normal QR doesnt fit?
It is a standard open ended dropout, but the QR end of the rear hope hub (the 'nipple' bit shown here: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=18762) doesnt fall into the dropout it wedges around the shoulder. Am I just being stupid/doing something daft?
  • 12mm droupouts look like this on the meta and use the 12mm axle-

  • Ah cheers for cleering that up, it is defo not the 12mm ones, looks very much like the bottom one. So my standard QR rear wheel should work fine? Maybe the dropout is bent?
  • At work at the moment Nick, will try to get some shots of the problem when I get home.

It is correct actually. as a 10mm bolt can be used on normal dropouts.... as I did on my NS.

and normal rear drop outs are NOT 9mm they are 10mm.

9mm has nothing to doe with any rear axle.

    front yes......

    look up your info.

    http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-hel ... d-concepts

PS 3/8" is greater than 9,5mm

shimano rear axles 10X1mm campa 10X26tpi
    Front hubs Yes 9mm

so yes you can use a 10mm through axle in a rear Qr drop out as it is 10mm NOT 9mm

    got it.

  • I said they were dropouts for 9mm QR or 10mm bolt which is correct.... Trying not to confuse things for the mere mortals amongst us... :?

What nic is getting at is the rear is a 10mm axle. Only the front ever has the possibility of been a 9mm axle.

Thats fair enough and I agree... but what I said was correct.

No its not as a rear QR axle always measures 10mm not 9mm

So what did the 9mm QR drivel refer to if not implying a 9mm QR axle?

No QR is 9mm as it has to fit through a 9mm (front) or 10mm (rear) axle, so saying 9mm QR implies its a 9mm axle with a QR hole does it not?

    I never mentioned an axle.

you shoved a rear drop out. and said it was a 9mm/10mm drop out.

where you should have said a 10mm drop out.
Or a rear Qr drop out which is 10mm

  • Back on topic...

I got home and checked the dropout, realised it was bent forwards so the QR (10mm?) dropouts wouldn't fit. I just bent it back and it works fine now.

Question is, will it being bent/me straightening it with a hammer weaken the dropout? Do I need a new one?

    Thanks for the replies :)

it is always a good idea to have a spare in the back pack.

    at least one.

  • it will be weaker yes, just because of the properties of the metal, once its bent once itll never retain its full strength. so yeah, keep some spares :)
  • Think I will pick up a spare dropout, maybe a silly question.. but which one do I get?

From the BETD site it's not obvious. :(

You have to be aware that the dropouts on Meta frames have changed over the years.

My 2008 Meta uses a 136 on the BETD site.

Nathan, funnily enough i had the same issue when i got a new 2010 Super4 frame from Madison,. The QR was bent slightly, so the QR wouldn't work. I spoke to Evans and they supplied me with a new one FOC.
I did bend and use an old knife on the rubbish one and machined away where it was sticking and never had any issues after that.
