rear derailleur jockey wheels

Im sure a very n00b Q but the wheels on the rear derailleur do not spin freely with out the chain on. As a result any back peddling can cause the chain to come off.
How do I service this? Are they a component that have to be replcaed or can the bearings be cleaned and re greased?

They do need periodically taken out and regreased, so yes they come apart.0

its on my 08 spesh rockhopper, think it is Sram.
Thanks for info and will have a look at finding some stuff on the net some where as to how to go about servicing them

if they have never been clean from new it may be time to do so.
make sure you remember from where they came if you remove them as they are different."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

They have been cleaned on bike but never taken apart so I think you are right!
