hi guys

my deore HT2 bottom bracket left hand cup has died, so im investigation options for a new bb

just wanted any reccomendations, i know the Hope ones come highly reccomended, is it worth the extra for ceramic over stainless.

also looked at KCNC, superstar, and the shimano SLX and the XTR ones,

any that i should go for, or really avoid?

I'd avoid the Aerozine ones.. I have one, and I think it's allergic to mud, grit, gunk and water. :( That'll teach me for going cheap.. next time it's a hope, or maybe a saint BB for me!

Are you sure it's gone or does it just need grease? Reason I ask I've found myself in the same position and have just stripped one down (well two cups) and there's bugger all grease in either and it's a common complaint with both Deore and XT BBs. And apparently the left side cup going is a common complaint also.

Mine's definitely gone because that was the side that smashed into a tree, the force of impact actually crushed the ball bearings so there's play in the one cup, the drive side is fine, just no grease so feels uber rough. I ordered the XT HTII BB as replacement and intend re-greasing immediately and topping up regularly, and replacing the bearings if and when they go after that (accidents aside)
  • i put in a xt when the same happened to my deor bb, i just used one of the very thin spacers between the crank arm and the LH cup and outer face and it seems to be keeping the crap out of the bearings so far.
  • i did regrease it and it loosened it up abit, but it is still much stiffer than it should be.

shimano is looking pretty popular so far :) ta guys

    anyone disagreeing?
  • You can't really beat a deore at that price.

Tad bit heavier but its nothing really. Never changed from a deore and it seems to be lasting ages.

My superstar one is going fine, better than the original Truvativ GXP one.

preload too high on LHS is another thing to watch out for. finger tight no more.
  • Yeah the cap is only finger tight. and it was a brand new frame when I fitted the BB. Might have to go for a standard deore again then :)

you get better seal-age on the xt but if you keep the deore greased up regularly and keep an eye on it and don't crash hard then you should get an extended run on one.

Brand new frame doesn't necessarily mean it's been faced. Should only cost about £10 for LBS to do it.

XT has lasted a lot longer than deore for me. Possibly worth getting shell faced, I measured mine (Specialized Hardrock) & it was perfectly true (within 0.02mm) it will only ever be as true as the thread anyway though.
