But a good aluminium frame may well be better than a budget carbon frame. Just being carbon doesn't automatically make it better.

Budget aluminium frames do exist. They are generally the ones with plain gauge tubes.

But I have yet to see a 'budget' carbon frame. Large numbers of carbon fibre frames are now made at very good price in the Far East by OEM companies, and they are just the same as the 'high end' ones that get painted up in Europe and re-branded. They only differ in terms of design detail.

I can't see how an aluminium frame would necessarily be any 'stronger' than a carbon frame. But of course aluminium is more impact resistant.

Kinesis make some decent reasonably priced ally frames. Just Google em, plenty of online retailers sell them.

Got a Racelight T2 as my winter bike frame.
  • I've got a Ribble Ultralite and i must say for the money it is a great ride. It is pretty light and durable and well able to withstand the abuse i give it. I commute on it every day and i'm a big lad at 15 stone!

I'm not suggesting there aren't budget aluminium frames. I was merely picking up your implication that carbon is automatically better.
Fact, some aluminium frames are better than some carbon ones. However, I accept that most aren't.
