Sram shifters are designed to work with Sram rear mechs ONLY. You can use whatever front mech you want. Brakes can be swapped freely also.

(Pretty sure on this as Sram use an exact actuation or something like that - sorry don't know the technical reasons). And SRAM shifters do not provide the amount of cable pull shimano derailleurs require.

    Agreed.

SRAM shifters pull a different amount of cable per click than Shimano do.

Yes, the cassettes are interchangeable, 10sp SRAM and 10sp Shimano cassettes have the same gaps between the cogs, but a SRAM rear mech moves sideways the right distance for the amount of cable pulled by a SRAM shifter, a Shimano rear mech moves sideways the right distance for the amount of cable pulled by a Shimano shifter.

A SRAM shifter would cause a Shimano rear mech to move the wrong distance - can't remember offhand whether it would be too little or too far, not that it matters, it's the wrong amount anyway !

Sram are 1:1 and Shimano are 2:1. But still don't know the answer to the problem!

You're right about SRAM being 1:1, I do remember that, but Shimano 2:1 - which way ?
    - does the mech move sideways twice as far as the amount of cable pulled, or t'other way round

im pretty sure sram shifters pull double the amount of cable than shimano which makes the sram feel faster and more direct while shimano feels smoother. shimano ratio is 1:2 rather than 2:1. sram claim more durability and less suceptable to contamination as dirt or cable stretch will have half the impact o indexing than shimano.
