BTW (and 'ping' Spen), does anyone know if the suspended element will be considered at his pending sentencing for the convictions in North Yorks in Feb 2010 or is it only considered if a further offence is committed during the period of suspension.

No idea about the legal question, but I can see him ending up inside sooner or later. I hate to say it but I can also see him dying at some point soon, whether from alchoholism or a wrapping his car round a tree.

Very sad case indeed, I remember him when he played for Tottenham in the early 90s, what a player. My dad had to peel me off the ceiling when he scored that free kick against Arsenal in the '91 FA cup semi final. Shame he never had the common sense or emotional maturity to match his sporting talent.

I went to a sportsmans dinner a few years ago where Bobby Robson was the speaker. He said that he once had to drag gazza out of the pub the night before a match and Gazza just couldn't undertsand what was so wrong about going on the lash with his dad the night before an England match.

His career spanned nearly 20 years? Surely it was about 10 at most? Also found it amusing that he attends Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous - nothing anonymous about it being splashed all over the news is there?

It is sad to see yet another wasted talent going down the route to self-destruction. I think the best we can hope for is that he doesn't take some innocent person with him :(

As a gooner and a Scotland fan, I just wish he had hit the bar more often when he played. :(

Seriously, though, another sad case of a talented boy going off the rails. I imagine Rooney may well go the same way.

    Yep no justice whatsoever...
A drunken waste of space admits to being 4, yes 4 times over the limit, gets a slapped wrist and told not to do it again.
A perfectly decent chap minding his own business gets employed and is given a 5 1/2 year sentence

I'm suprised anyone is suprised at the one law for some and another law for the rest continues to apply.

As a footballer he was brilliant but like so many "gifted" people it seems to be paired with a determination to self-destruct.

Alan Pardew signed as Newcastles manager for 5 & a half years today. It's a joke, he is suggesting that being the Toons Manager is as bad as going to prison. Geddit?

    Doh
  • THe only time I have ever seen Gazza was in a Glasgow Hotel many years ago whilst he was staying there with the Rangers team.

The team were milling about in the reception, whilst I was waiting for a colleague.

A man walked up to a group of several of the players which included Gazza and asked if they would come over to say hello to his blind friend who was a lifelong rangers fan.

The players blanked the man except for Gazza, who went over, sat down and spent about 20 minutes laughing and joking with the guys friend, which I'm sure made hi day.

Since then I've always had a tad more respect for the man, despite his problems.

(I think Rangers lost 3-0 to Grasshoppers later that day!)
