Sweating........

Is it just me or does your sweat smell worse the older you get?

I went for a 5 mile run last night, got back and went for a shower.
After that I went to put my kit in the wash.........honestly, it smelt that bad I thought a cat had pissed on it.

So is it just me?
Are you a stinker too?

The 'cat p*ss' aroma is not uncommon with some trainers - the glue reacts with perspiration. Allegedly.

I read somewhere that the fitter you are, the more you sweat but the odour is less.

It's just you. I smell like roses.
Or maybe your cat did p*ss on your kit?

Diet seems to affect the way your sweat smells too.

Used to know a guy who was obsessed with garlic: in all of his meals, garlic pills, etc., and he stank of it 24/7 because his skin was exuding it. Not so obvious with other foods, but they seem to make a difference. If I eat an absurd amount of meat, I smell a lot worse than if I've been eating veggie stuff. Well, in some ways but not others. Swings and roundabouts :)

lol :) some kit just holds onto that odour causing bacteria worse than others, even after a spin in the washer!!!

Try high temp washing and diluted bleach (on your kit that is not you )

**just re-read my post and I sound like an advert for persil or something!

It's probably your diet; an increased beer and garlic intake has probably done it. This is what happens when you get old, that and p or ey si ht.
    Many happy trails!
  • Try some of this.. I was sceptical but after using it on a recent trekking holiday (luggage weight restrictions and clothes reused for several days) I would definitely recommend it.. seems to work on my climbing shoes too and they are pretty rank!
  • Beer, garlic and chilis probably have a large portion of blame.
The bacteria build up in man made fibres of the base layer could be an issue.
I'll have to try some of the vase layer specific washing stuff I've heard about, it's supposed to kill the bacteria without using extream temperatures that damage the fibres.

I hate it when you wash the clothing and the smell comes back almost immediately. I believe bicarbinate of soda can be used to extract the 'smell'. Not tried it myself.

  • Several points:

Apparently sweating is a "learned response" - I heard an interview with an F1 trainer who was talking about it. It's apparently a very poor comparative indicator of effort between individuals.

I've found that Nike kit retained the smell really badly. On the converse, merino wool stuff is magic - including merino wool mix stuff like the Stutt VR jerseys.

As for washing, try to use higher temps and a powder (rather than a liquid) like Ariel (especially one with Febreez in - it's great). Liquids don't have built-in bleaches so can't kills the smell bugs so well.

    Three of my favourites :(

I find garlic stink also comes out through my hair.
  • i also LOVE the smell of my own sweat. smells a bit like korma, which is weird, as i only have one about every month, but i have serious difficulty in removing the smell from the pubescent tufts of hair under my pits. have tried everything, even swarfega. still dosent work.
Am i strange in that i actually ENJOY going up hills? Yes, yes i am.
