My 1st 'new' bike in a while. It's a 15 year old British Eagle K2 frame with the original wheels.

Single speed 'cos I've no 7 speed stuff to fit the rear hub. 36T - 16T seems OK though.

Built with spares bits, apart from new tyres, but I might buy some full wrap around type mudguards for it ?

I'm bound to come off it lots in the snow and ice but what the hell :D

Nice conversion, I did the same on my early 90's Marin & love riding it SS around town. The 36/16 you have on it is a fair bit under powered for the road though, I use 44/18 & even that's a little under geared. It gives me a clean looking magic ratio though & works well enough for short trips.
See you went the half link chain route, I hate those crappy chains with a vengeance personally. They wear out so quick in my experience, plus my last one snapped leaving me a long scoot home. I just use cheap SRAM 8 speed ones now.
  • Thanks Salsa.

If the 1/2 link bmx chain fails then I'll use a lower roller guide on the bb to take up the slack of a 'normal' chain. I did this on my hardtail mtb for a while (see pic in sig) and it worked fine.

I'll see how I get on with the gearing over the next month or so. There's a fairly steep hill on the commute to work that I stand up on as it is.

I'm most worried about using skiny, smooth tyres at 90 psi (I've never owned a road bike). That and the V-brakes wearing through the already worn rims.

  • Quite a nice looking old school bike!

I wish I had a little bike to buy to set up singlespeed.
