Im thinking of replacing my stem from an Easton EA30. Initially considering an FSA but just wondered what others I should consider. Looking at spending £40 ish

Thomson.
No reason to buy anything else.0 -
Except that they're expensive and not actually any better than some stems costing half as much :?
That's quite long you're looking at there, are those just examples or are you definately after a 100mm?Uncompromising extremist0 -
exotic for 14 quid. Light, well made.0

I purchased an 80mm Exotic from CarbonCycles and it was a very welcomed addition to my bike.
I normally go for Race Face myself though, but there are many brands out there.0 -

I havent measured it yet but I believe that it is 100mm (18" cube AMS)0 -

There's at least 3 on the singletrack classifieds, allegedly as new, for £40 at the moment. They just work, I don't ever recall even hearing of one breaking, a beautiful bit of kit. Fit and forget.
Sure, you can go cheaper if you want, but when they're so readily available for the budget stated why bother?0 -
i am guessing he wants a lighter stem given his suggestions - Thomsons are not very light.0

When was the last time you heard of any quality stem breaking? Other than superlight race kit anyway. Last time I saw a broken stem it was the 90sUncompromising extremist0 -
Weirdly the stem I have seen broken more times than any other is... Thomson. Maybe people ride them harder - but they did have a poor batch a while back with faulty face plates and bolts which kept breaking.0

You say that, but if you compare them to the ones quoted by the OP there's next to no difference in weight... 175g for the 100mm FSA and 160g odd for an X4.When was the last time you heard of any quality stem breaking? Other than superlight race kit anyway. Last time I saw a broken stem it was the 90s
That's a fair point - the few stems I've seen cracked in recent years seemed to have been where the faceplate has been tightened rather too enthusiastically with an excessively large allen key.
I stand by the recommendation though 8)0 -
Yes, they are very heavy for carbon, I don't think people realise how much they are. I'd never recommend a carbon stem anyway, just cannot see the benefits on a stem. The Exotic seem to lack a 100mm version of the Meta F, but the 80mm is a very competetive 120g. Good choice for xc and trail bikes.
If not planning to save any weight over the EA30, and it is doing the job, can't see the point in changing really unless want a different rise/length.0 -
All depends what you want out of the stem. Shorter, longer, different angle, etc.0

fsa os 190 was my choice, was quite cheap and has been really good
