Should I buy a Specialized Rockho 2011 or a sale price 2010?

I'm looking to buy a hardtail for about £600-700 for trail riding. I've looked at a few bikes but favour the Specialized Rockhopper SL which I can buy new from a great local dealer for £699 or could get the 2010 model on-line from Cycles UK for £559. Is the 2011 model worth the extra? I'm also tempted by a rockhopper comp for £639, again it would be the 2010 model from Cycles UK.

I'd really appreciated some guidance here. I like the idea of buying direct from the shop who will set up and service the bike but I've know idea of whether the extra cash is worth it. I prefer the colour of the new bike but that seems a pretty fickel reason! Spec wise I'm finding it difficult to compare.

Any other suggestions within my price range would be great.

Thanks in advance...

Spec wise they are very similar. Tektro brakes on the 2010, basic shimanos on the 2011 which are pretty similar. Basic Rockshox dart on the 2010 with a reasonable suntour on the 2011, both Deore 27speed, both essentially the same frame. Have a look around your local dealers as well, then you can actually SIT on them, feel what the parts are llike. I know we have a couple of the 2010 in red and one in black too, reduced. Other places will have them like that. And buying online, you dont get them totally assembled or your free checkup, and if there should be a problem its a nightmare getting it sorted.
  • im certainly no expert but can speak from experience as i have one of these and well happy with it.

go for a 2010 SL COMP

Just found a 2010 rockhopper SL in red at a really good local dealer for £580 and they threw in a free helmet worth £55 and a free check up. Thanks for the advice all. Can't wait for Saturday to get out and have a ride!

    Cheers.
  • sale price 2010. every year, spesh lower the spec and up the price, and yes, i do know that most bike companies do this, but specialized do seem the worst. For Example, to get like-for-like kit on a 2008 rockhopper on a 2011 rockhopper, you now have to pay850-900 quid, instead of 600 quid for the 2008 bike. reccomend canyon bikes, they sell direct from manufacturer, so they cut out the middle man and are GREAT value.
Am i strange in that i actually ENJOY going up hills? Yes, yes i am.

  • Just bought a rockhopper sl comp 2010 from edinburgh bicycle coop for £540, i think it's back up to 599 now though, still a good price by the looks of things though.
