Scrapping Cars

My old car died on me yesterday (gearbox) and its going to cost more to repair than the cars worth.
I've never scrapped a car before so was wondering if anybody has and if so who did they use? Can you scrap it for cash?
I know next to nothing about cars so sorry for my ignorance, in fact I bloody despise cars and I was doing well without one for the past 5 years until needing one last March!

You'll have a local scrappy who will buy it off of you. I got rid of one in similar circumstances in February. Remember the guy will collect it from you and any profit he makes will involve outlay and work on his part so you're not going to get a lot. I'd blown the engine on mine and got £250. Felt I'd started the bid too low and eight weeks later saw it driving around obviously with a new engine.Neil

it depends on the value of the rest of the car.
if it has decent body work/other valuable parts, but just needs a new engine, a scrappy might buy it off you at a low rate.
if the car is really scrap, phone around a few scrapyards and get their price per tonne.
Go to the highest offering scrappy.....
you take the car (obviously difficult with a fsked gearbox...they might collect it for a fee....or tow it yourself).. the weigh it, and give you cash, then they inform the dvla of its destruction and the certificate comes to you automatically.
sounds like they did a number on woolifer, and filled out the tranfer of ownership section of the v5 instead of the destruction part.....
as a guide....a couple of months ago..scrap was worth about £150 a tonne...but remember some scrappies will deduct some cash to dispose of the tyres and battery.....Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

I scrapped my Mondeo in the summer when it reached the end of it's economical life. I got £80 from a scrappie for it.0

Cee,
It wasn't formally written off. As I'd had a warning light fail and cooked it I wasn't going to get owt from the insurers. So sold to scrap/dealer as opposed to formally scrappedNeil

I'm thinking about ebaying it and stating that gearbox has gone and it's jammed in gear. You buy it and you collect it!!!There is never redemption, any fool can regret yesterday...

Just make sure that you use an authorised scrapyard who will properly take care of all the DVLA paperwork (your local council may be able to reccomend one) or you may have a problem in future if the car gets dumped or is sold on illegally. Better to get a few pounds less for it and have peace of mind that you won't get any comeback and also you know that they are not just going to dump the battery/tyres in a field somewhere."I have a lovely photo of a Camargue horse but will not post it now" (Frenchfighter - July 2013)0

have you checked its not something simple like the linkage or something. many are cable operated now. what kind of car is it.0

That sounds a better idea than scrapping it. Some youngster will probably fix it up and turn it into his/her pride and joy.0 -
The going rate for scrapping a car is betwen £100 - £130 tonne depending on the scrapyard. Took one load of bikes to the scrapper and got £55 cash for 600kgs and another scrapper gave us £91 for 700kgs but this was on account. Cars need stripping down, battery, wheels, petrol tank and cat converter need removing so much more work involved.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0
