Are there any on-line route finders that show altitude? Michelin and Google maps plot the route for you with distances but I would also like to know the climbing as well.

bikeroutetoaster significantly underestimates total ascent. There is an as yet uncorrected error in the algorithm that calculates it. Other than that - it's a very good planner.
I don't know what you think is significant, but I have always found the total vertical given by bikeroutetoaster very close (usually within 5%) to the numbers produced by various bike computers (Garmin, Polar, Ciclosport). May be it depends on the underlying data for the country? FWIW I have never used it for UK routes.
As much as 30% low, compared with Garmin Edge data, and the same route (ie the same gpx or tcx file) opened in Memory Map and Quo2 OS mapping - All UK.
