Changing stems etc

I have just bought a ( very cheap indeed ) spare bike and need to change a few things. The stem is the very old and cheap quill design and I need to change it to the more modern better quality type as I need a shorter stem. Is this mod fairly easy ? What parts do I need ? As I'm sure you can tell, I'm fairly new at bicycle DIY stuff, ahem. :oops:

Pretty sure this will mean you can run an ordinary stem

hope it fits.
there are 2 sizes and it depends on what size you have now.

Indeed, that is for the relatively rare 1 1/8" threaded, most threaded are 1"
