Stem bolts

My stem bolts, both at the bar end and the headset end are looking a little rusty and need replacing, but they seem to be a very strange size (23mm long) is this normal? and if so are there any replacement kits made specifically for stems? I cant be bothered hacksawing them down as it will probably chew the thread up and then wreck the stem thread so was hoping to be able to buy them made to measure.

I havent found any 23mm bolts on any site Ive looked at so far...

TIA

yes there are many kits out there. yes 23mm is a standard length.

but there are many different sized bolts used in stems. so you will nee to get all the correct infos. bolt size M4,M6 or... then the thread pitch and of cause the length.

stem bolts I've seen have always been high tensile 12.9 or 14.0 ; do not fit any old bolt.

Some suppliers give the bolt measurement including the head. Have a look at Westfield Fasteners. They seem to have risen from the ashes of Stagonset.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

No big deal, 25/23 what's with 2mm poking out the back (likely won't anyway).

Must ask are yo measuring properly (sorry) it's the thread only that wants measuring not the OAL.

The standard issue bolts are usually hypercrap, as are most bolts you find on bikes, any half decent s/s or regular steel even basic 8.8 grade will be far stronger than the norm.

  • Im a graduate mechanical engineer so no worries on the thread measurement :D

Im replacing them with 316 s/s but after trying to fit them last night it appears that they are rather bespoke as although the thread is M6 the head is 5mm so a standard m6 wont fit into the recess

    grrrrr
  • On the plus side it means Ive got something new to look at on ebay as I'll probably end up looking at carbon stems now to replace the easton ea30

Either of which is really stupid to use for a stem unless expensively coated, the hydrogen embrittlement could literally prove fatal, certainly painful, 10.8 max.
