My deepest sympathy goes out to the families of the two guys.
I'm originally from Cumbria, and that A595 at Moota is a lethal section of road. It's one long straight road, where drivers exceed the speed limit as a matter of course. Don't yet know if speed had anything to do with this, or maybe something like low sun in the sky obscuring the drivers view.
When I was last up there, my route brought me by this section of road, and I just crossed over it and back onto quiet lanes. It's a shame we have to do that sometimes."There are no hills, there is no wind, I feel no pain !"

Condolence to there families.
It really has been a horrific weekend for the cycling fraternity, and serves as a reminder to us all how vulnerable we all are in the persuit of our sport/passtime.Tail end Charlie

Awful incident. I'm surprised at how little reaction there has been to it - nothing on the front page that I could see.
Do we know who they were ?

They are named in the article below as Christian and Nicholas Townend who were brothers. Very sad newas and my thoughts are with their family

It was a coach. And when I first read the headline "Two cyclists dead after collision with coach" I must admit I was confused. I thought they crashed into a person (coach), not a bus.
Not a joke - and condolences to the families.0 -
Awful - and a quick google shows Christian was a very good racer too.
Could have been any one of us.0 -

...
I've driven up that section many times as my sister lives in Cockermouth and know the road is fast and furious.
What a huge tragedy for the family, my heart genuinely goes out to them.CAAD9

Coaches are limited to 100kph (approx 62.5mph). I doubt it was speed, a coach can kill you at 20mph. More than likely driver 'error'.
I've driven coaches & buses since 2001 and companies often push their drivers to the limit. I've not worked since January after a row with my employer at the time, over a shift that started at 5am and finished at 6am the next day (25 hours on my own).
Apparently it was legal (not in my opinion - ie where driver send their breaks). I accused my bosses of having no morals and being more concerned with money than safety. I felt physically sick I was so tired. I was sacked shortly after.0 -
its an accident blackspot that stretch"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. What we're witnessing here is the world's most high profile mid-life crisis" Afx237vi Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:43 pm0

It is quite literally a killer road- a few years ago a police motorcyclist was obliterated on that same stretch- it's almost like a motorway in terms of speed
Which unfortunately begs the question- what the hell were they doing cycling on there- especially if they were local- I 'd sooner cycle on the M250 -

That stretch is about 6 miles from my house. I imagine the reason they were on there was that it's one of only 3 rideable roads from the Cockermouth area at present. I've done it myself for years: up the A66 to Keswick, up to bothel behind Bass lake, then turn left andheead back to Cockermouth on the A595.
The real problems with that little stretch where this happened are that it has no white line to ride inside, the surface is deformed at the edge and you have to ride further right that you'd like and the overhanging trees make it difficult for drivers to pickyou up at distance, that and the low sun seem to have caused this tragedy.
I didn't know either of the lads well, my little brother is good mates with their younger brother... christian used to do the Tuesday night TTs from time to time and once copped off with a girl I was after when we were 14. Nobody had a bad word to say about them at all though
