spd pedals

I am looking for a set of SPD pedals for XC use.
I have been looking at a price range of £30-£50. I don't need anything really snazzy.
I have been reading lots of reviews about the Crank brothers candy.
i use Shimano M520 on my commuter bike, however old age is setting in and the minimal range of movement in the cleats is starting to give me knee pain.
Any other recommendations?

might be of interest re: knees. I'm having the same issues with my 540 SPDs, take a look at this thread http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=127449680

I've switch from Shimano to CB for exactly the same reason. The cleats don't last very long and it's a different engagement system that takes some getting used to but for feel, they're the nuts. They are also very light for the money.I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...

Either that or try using multi-release cleats with your shimano spd's. They have more lateral movement in them if this is of use...0

Currently have these fitted but still dont solve the issue0 -
Time pedals have lots of float so good for your knees and last ages.
These would be very good options, though a touch overbudget. You don't tend to get hotstops on your feet because of the large area of the pedal.

+1 for Time pedals. They don't have the infamous reliability issues of Crank Brothers pedals either.
You should be able to find Time Aliums pedals within your budget.0 -

I've been using these for the last 6 months: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=4516
They are good for pushing off quickly i.e. in a race or if you hit a gnarly section it's always nice to be able to un-clip and have one foot floating on the outer cage in case you need to dab quickly in a corner, or over a rock. I found with the M540's I was always slipping off the pedal and ending up with my nuts on the down-tube ...PAIN!!0 -

I have a set of these as well and they are great, clip in when you want, unclip when you feel a bit nervous0 -
+1 for Shimano M647s, cracking pedals0
