I think [BBC} Panorama's program / investigation earlier this week into corruption within FIFA did the bulk of the damage
It was a damning report that named and shamed top FIFA officials for accepting bribes from certain nations in regards to the hosting of World Cup events.
FIFA officials named in the program have threatened the BBC with libel and as the BBC is regarded as the mouthpiece of the UK, why would they want to allow England to host it?
Rest assured that Panorama and other investigative journalism type programs would only dig a little deeper on these allegations in the future0 -

Actually part of Korea's bid for 2022 involved staging a game in North Korea so not quite.
If anyone thinks any of the journalist reporting had anything to do with this really needs to think long and hard. Russia has a history for being unsafe with one of the largest murder rates for journalists (obviously printing stuff against the government), piss poor infrastructure and allegations of corruption that goes all the way to the very top. Qatar is tiny (600,000 people live there) with no stadia, temperatures above 40 degrees on average (during the time of the world cup), no freedom of press (almost as bad as Russia), 14th century laws that have people put in prison for being homosexual. (btw what happens if Israel qualifies for that world cup considering Qatar denies it's existence?) and corruption that goes all the way to the very top.
The whole thing was about who'd pay the most in backhanders. The fact the English didn't tells you why you only received 2 votes (with one coming from the English guy). Nothing to do with Panorama investigations, Sunday Times articles or fan violence last night (if fan violence had any influence the Russians wouldn't have gotten close to this).
The worst thing for me about this was seeing our leader and future king suck up the arses of these corrupt bum nuggets in Geneva. Should have told them to stick the cup up their pooper (though not in Qatar...they'd be arrested).

Euro 96, Commonwealth games both fantastic sporting spectacles in the last 15 years, the ryder cup held in Newport of all places bought a vibrance and excitement to a town just chugging along, The cricket world cup another succesful example, All held in Britain!!!
Why wouldn't we want the world cup and the boost it will give this country, both in opinion and economy? Why not be proud of what we have, because its a damn sight better than a lot of other places, if France can hold a world cup final in a city which is essentially a giant toilet filled with beggars and scammers where you are constantly harrassed or tried to be pickpocketed (paris) then why could we not have a fantastic world cup here, at the home of football?
But there will never be a world cup here whilst Messieurs Blatter and Platini are running the show, or whilst we try to tell the world what a sh1te country we live in, when really, its not that bad0 -

Why would the Olympics be a farce? As Gaz said, Euro 96 wasn't. The Commonwealth games weren't. The Olympic preparations are on budget and ahead of schedule. Stop being so f*cking miserable. Seriously. Or if you're going to do it, at least keep it to yourselves!

I think it annoys me more than usual because I've just got back from three amazing countries where people are actually friendly to each other. you might have a barely usuable grasp of each other's language, but you can still speak to a stranger, and they're happy. Here everyone's bloody miserable, and there's plenty of people who do nothing but moan. If it's that bad, do something about it, STFU or GTFO. 0 -

I think that is why places seem nicer, because people are content with what they have to a degree, or are more accepting of it, there is a horrible competitiveness in this country, and a desire for failure and scandal, when really, compred to many places, we've got it ok mostly0 -
