Qatar should be an exciting prospect for the visiting fans, what with it being a culture steeped in the rich history of football.

They'll certainly look forward to the large variety of local beers on offer.

It'll be a disaster, I reckon. (Russia will be OK)

  • Looked to me as though the winners were those with the best presentations and the best potential legacy. And both were countries who haven't hosted it before. Can't see what's the problem to be honest.

    Oh, I forgot. It's Bikeradar.

  • Apparently Qatar is slightly smaller than Conneticut

Its going to be a tight squeeze to fit 12 stadia in.

And given we only won 2 votes and one of them was our own I wonder who our other mate was? I blame WIggle.

They weren't the two best bids technically though. They were the two worst rated by FIFA's technical assessors.

Is Qatar really going to be left with a hugely beneficial legacy from 2022? Won't there just be oversized stadia in close proximity in a country with no ongoing use for them? What am I missing here?

Qatar has 350,000 citizens, which I doubt would fill all the stadia even if the entire population were to simultaneously go to the football of a saturday afternoon.

Russia is another matter and I think there's good arguments for them getting 2018. Whether or not those had anything to do with them getting it.

All the accusations about coruption, underhand payments etc. whats all the fuss? sounds like a case of sour grapes to me.
Russia won it hands down by a democratical procedure, in fact 26 0f the 22 FIFA members voted for them

I heard that they are gonna dismantle the stadiums after the tournament and give them to poorer countries.

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

  • I think they should have had a phone in vote. Who knows, we could have all been looking forward to a nice summer on Anne Widdicombe.

Crikey yes that is the plan for some of the stadia. The plan then is to build the stadia somewhere that doesn't need them, host the world cup somewhere with very few football fans, cool them with outdoor air conditioning systems that have never been built on a similar scale before to combat potential 50deg heat, then dismantle the stadia and rebuild them somewhere else that does need them because they do have football fans.

    It all makes sense

Do you think even Mrs Blatter trusts her other half?

Been a very interesting discussion on this on 5live tonight. No sour grapes for me, I had a small bet on England to lose out, but if you think the voting process used is a model democratic process I can only hope your wink means you really know that is nowhere near the case. FIFA is rotten all the way through. (and our domestic administrators aren't much above that either.)

So a £billion plus sport that involves billionaires/millionaires/huge advertising + TV revenues is corrupt? I'm shocked

Seriously, what did we expect? The Hispanic countries would have gone for the Spain/Portugal option as that way your free hol. is warm in a country that understands you. UK? cold, wet, whistleblowing. Russia? They can make you an offer you can't refuse and it might involve girls/cash/discretion/cash/diamonds/cars/ whatever if Wikleaks is to be believed. Abramovich wanted to buy Courchevel 1850 (posh French ski resort) some years back, that's how much money they have and money talks at those levels

Exciting here in Qatar, many locals have been saying for the last week that Qatar would win, never really believed it would happen. The air conditioned stadium idea has been tested, I took my boys to the trial a couple of months ago. The temp outside was in the 40 s , while in th (uncovered) stadium the temp was a very comfortable mid 20 degrees. Been living here 10 years, if I stay another 10 years I could see Scotland play here in the world cup

The Qatar proposal really does take the opposite tack to the Holland/Belgium attempt to create the greenest world cup ever....

I like the way that the media keeps saying we got two votes, slightly skimming over the fact that one of those votes was by Engerland for Engerland. That makes it one vote. two years of smoozing, 50 countries visited, 15 million spent, endless stream of celebs and we get one vote.

I actually suspect we got two votes but that the english chap voted for Russia as it was more lucrative...
  • wait for the backlash blaming the media. I wouldnt want to be Andrew Jennings right now...

    +1

I used to play and follow football as a kid, watched a few games at uni and stuff but the money and general crap/immature attitude of the players ruins the professional game.

At least we won't have put up with nearly 8 years of England 2018 hype only to watch a pi55 poor England team get knocked out in the last 16.

Don't think England should be too dissapointed, surely winning the World Cup, or at least having a good run is far more important than hosting it. Me - I would be happy if Scotland qualified for anything. I am currently trying to persuade any qatari to buy Aberdeen, what is going on there? bottom of the league and no manager.

No denying that England were pìss poor, well, below pìss poor, but for about the 2nd time in my life I find myself agreeing with Graham Taylor: ''I'm just surprised that we're surprised''....
Former England manager Graham Taylor also dismissed criticism of the media and said nothing about Fifa surprised him any more.

"I'm just surprised that we're surprised," he said. "Fifa is an organisation that doesn't have to answer to anyone. What did we expect?

"Fifa for me is full of people who say 'yes' to your face and 'no' behind your back. Their reputation has not changed over many years.

"England have had little or no influence. We are considered to be arrogant and know-alls."

Couldn't agree more, the executive comittee play the bidding nations like a piano. Good old Jack Warner is a prime example. http://swissramble.blogspot.com/2009/10/power-corruption-lies.html

Probably good that we didn't get it. Imagine the cost to the taxpayer to host it.... and then everyone would just be complaining that they couldn't afford tickets in 7 years' time.

Kind of like the Olympics. 8)
  • We did worse than you. One vote apparently. And it "only" cost us 47 million dollars, or about 28 million pounds to lose so spectacularly.

Here's hoping they won't bother trying again, ever.

I sit firmly on the side of glad it's not coming here. With the heightened security required, cancelled leave and rest days for the emergency services and nothing but rubbish about what a dull WC it's been again in the papers and on the TV, why would you want it here other than the roads might be a tad quieter for us cyclists. I just wish they'd have held the Qatar event in 2018 so our chav fans could go over there, get up to their usual antics and find themselves locked up in some 3rd world prison with no hope of seeing daylight again until they've succomed to 40 lashes of the big stick.
