depends on the cable, some cables come pre-lubed

there is this you can use http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=2607

I tend not to bother lubing cables though unless I am installing them, in which case I use a cable luber and GT85

For winter I use wet lube, purple extreme, in the summer I use a dry lube, generally finish line

    I like Rock n Roll Gold :)
  • I've always used a wet lube on my chain, and it has always been Campag Amber Plus 5. But running low on it now.
  • For all those who know (I dont) can you use wet lube all year, or does it clog up.

I have also bought that rock and roll.

    Thank you

Use the (Finish Line) wet stuff all year. I tried the waxy White Lightning one summer, and I ate a drivetrain in 800 miles daily commute. Says it all really. Wet lube and clean or wipe down regularly. It's worth the sticky hassle when you look in your wallet at the end of the year.

The FL wet lube is great for cables too and I use it on my cables and sleeves all the time. Again - it looks quite mucky, but is always undeniably greasy enough to work in all weathers, especially suitable for right now.
  • I have always used a wet lube all year round. To clean the chain I remove it and spray with WD40, and then run it through my hands using some old rag.
  • Thanks wet lube it is, by the way WD40 is (I am told" NEVER to be used on chains as it ruins the coating) but as you said for cleaning I see no problems.

Engine oil and moly grease to seal it in. I'm on my fourth week without relubing.

An unlubed clean chain is just as efficient as a lubed clean chain*. The only thing that chain oil does is prevent wear, which it does by flushing the little worn metal particles out of the moving part of the chain. Given that it's good practice to clean and relube before your chain oil is 'saturated' with dirt and grit, how often you need to clean and relube depends on how often and where you ride and how well you clean it, rather than the oil that you use. So really, so long as you clean and relube regularly, it doesn't matter what you use. You could even use cooking oil (so long as you changed it before it gummed up as vegetable oil tends to do). I use car gearbox oil because it's very cheap (£5 a litre which lasts years) and I like the smell.

As for cables I drip a little 3-in-1 into each end every week or so.

Very good post, but gear oil - come on - it smells like cat wee......

I use GT85 on everything - does the job for my daily all year round commute without problems.

Nothing fancy either - just a wipe with a rag as the chain spins round backwards and then spray a load onto the chain and cassette as you also spin the chain backwards.

In the real world, it does fine.

  • I know this a is a bit late but Muc Off Wet Lube is very, very good and won best in test in mbuk (i know most of you don't read it). Compared to Weldtite wet lube i is awesome stuff, it is quite light and penetrates the rollers well, lasts a long time and keeps teh chain very clean compared to the Weldtite Stuff. I'll carry on using it until the weather gets better in spring and then I'll switch over to Squirt.

you just said that you use gt85 and I was only recommending s good one which was what the thread seemed to be asking about. Gt 85 is quite similair to WD40 but with a touch of very light lubricant which wil wash away in no time.

He didn't say that at all to be fair, said he'd bought some!

Finish line wet lube here, very happy with it (bought just before I read the MBUK test, which isn't totally relevant to road commuting of course).

I have bought the GT85 for the bike frames as it keeps tyhem in good condition and use wet lube for the chain etc, is that better.

  • Keep your drive chain clean to minimise the grinding paste effect & you can use what ever is close to hand for lube ( within reason ).

Dry lube apply more often, wet lube clean more often.
    The choice is yours

I've been using Squirt lube since early last year. TBH I was pretty bad at putting it on regularly but I just got round to checking my chain for wear and it doesn't even fit in the 0.75 side on my Park measuring thing after 5 days commuting each week.

It doesn't feel quite enough for the wet mucky roads at the moment but my chain was really clean for about 9 months.
I'm left handed, if that matters.
  • muc off wetlube. works well on all moving parts that need lubing.
