im planning a little trip around the uk in the spring, there is plenty of room in the car for the wife, 2 hounds and all of our kit but there's nowhere for the bike.
original plan was to put the bike on the roof but i recently found out this could have a pretty negative effect on mpg.
would a roof box have the same effect? they look pretty aero-dynamic but i wonder if they are more-so than a bike :? if they were better, i would keep the bik in the boot and out kit in the box.
so, would a roof box or a bike on the roof be more efficient?

Never used a roof box but I find my bike on the roof gives a negligible mpg loss.0

interesting.
someone else mentioned a loss of about 140miles per tank but by their own admission they were driving at 85mph, i wonder if the reduction in mpg is on a steep curve in comparison to speed perhaps?0 -

Yeah it does get progressively worse by quite a bit.0 -
makes sense.
i tend to drive very strictly below 70mph as it means i dont have to be on the look out for the filth and it is suprising how much fuel it saves compared to even driving at 75-80.0 -

the most economical speed (supposedly) is 56mph, something to do with drag, i know that as speed increases, the drag coeffecient increases exponentially as a squared value of the speed (if that makes any sense), and i think 56 is where the revs are at an adequate level to keep you going, and the wind resistance doesnt make tooo much impact into your MPG.
however that might be bollocks, i just know hypermilers like the number 560 -
I've got one of those long thin roof boxes. Don't notice too much difference in MPG when using it.0

Is that because its poor either way?0 -

Guess it depends on whether you already have a roofbox, can steal one or need to buy one.
Cost of box needs to be < cost of extra juice.
Or you could leave the wife behind, and have space in the car.I don't do smileys.

if i leave wife and the hounds behind it will save me the fuckarseing about with some kind of roof mounted pish i suppose0

If you are on a bit of a jaunt it might be worth having the box for bits and pieces and the bikes in the car. Then they are easy to get at, and can be safely locked away overnight.0

And will allow you to leave a trail of hookers in ditches with their heads on backwards.

I've got someone you can add to that list if you like? Would involve you travelling to West Brom though...0 -

no way 140 miles per tank. i put my bike on the roof and i lose maybe a maximum of 60. i know that's a lot of miles but at least you car stays clean0
