top tip: if you're going to tighten your bike chain at lunchtime, remember to also tighten the wheel nuts afterwards - otherwise your rear wheel could come off while you're going round a roundabout on your way home.

    many thanks for all of your kind words. :D

    in retrospect it was fairly amusing (now that my sack has stopped hurting) and fairly bloomin stupid. I ended up just looking a dick, but it could've been a lot worse - was in the middle of a big, busy roundabout and the bike just locked up. managed to not topple and wobbled over to a traffic island.

    i won't be quite so carefree about fettling in the future...

    I've been close to doing that. Saved only by noticing the rattling before getting on the bike.
